Ippon Seoi-nage, to juji-gatame

This technique is Ippon Seoi-nage to juji-gatame. For those that don't like the Japanese terminology, it's shoulder throw to arm-bar. Demonstrated here by Landon Showalter (Uke) and Joe Rossini (Tori). You will see a step by step breakdown of the setup, the throw and finally the submission; both in picture form and video.

  • Step 1
  • Basic starting position: Right hand on opponents lapel, left hand behind their elbow
  • Step 2
  • Lift and draw with right hand, pull with left hand to break their balance forward
  • Step 3
  • Put your right foot in front of opponents right foot,(90 degree step), lift with left hand and turn wrist (like you are looking at your watch).
  • step 4
  • Put your left foot in front of their left foot (90 degree step). Note how we are facing the same direction! Right arm goes under ipponents right arm and locks their shoulder into your bicep.
  • step 5
  • Left hand secures opponents arm to your chest & is pulling down. This helps load opponent onto your back.
  • step 6
  • Continue driving forward keeping opponent firmly secured with left & right arms.
  • step 7
  • Opponent is thrown to their back. Notice how I am still in balance, keeping control of opponents right arm.
  • step 8
  • Right hand secures opponents wrist, left hand stays in same position.
  • step 9
  • Step over opponents head with left leg while right leg stays in tight driving knee into opponents side securing them in position.
  • step 10
  • Keeping pressure forward my right shin & instep wraps under opponents arm pit.
  • step 11
  • Roll back, making sure to stay tucked in tight to opponents side. Keeping their arm secured to your chest, squeez knees together & elevate hips until they tap.
  • Rotated image of shin&instep hook.
  • Here is a better angle of the right instep hook under opponents armpit & shoulder. (Keeping his hook deep is the key to securing opponents shoulder)!

I like to be a lot lower when I do this throw. It is classified as an arm throw, but the hips are very important and make it work. You get low so you can spring up better (on your toes not your heels!)

I also try to get my opponent a lot more off balanced to his front right corner. Rather than stepping towards him, I try to step half way and bring him to me. In effect, I like to exaggerate the motion showed in the video. This makes it much more effective for me.

I noticed the instep hooked under the shoulder at the end. Granted, I'm a bit new, but is there more of an advantage with that? Looks like it makes it easier to keep the knees tight. Nice move!

if you just jump into this move some people will take your back. my fav setup is to fake a footsweep on the side that you will throw with. your opponent will step back with this foot giving you room to twist in, also as your opponent is moving back from the sweep they should then move forward which is the energy needed for this throw

Being attacked is like being asked a question- if you answer right you won't get asked anymore questions.

With the gi, it is still relatively easy to pull your opponent off balance (kuzushi) even without movement. I'm not sure I'd ever want to try seo in a no-gi environment, even if Karo claims it works. Tongue If you want even more control and protection against chokes, try morote seoinage instead.

Basics! Love it! Keep it simple. This was the first combo I was ever taught and I'm glad someone posted it.
