Options for half guard sweeps
![]() |
Here are a couple options for your half guard sweep game.
Starting off in half guard.
Most grapplers will try and move your head away and flatten you out.
By placing your hands on your opponents shoulder and bicep you will make it very difficult for them to flatten you out.
Feeling your opponent trying to move your head away from their center, quickly take the hand on the bicep and dive under their leg grabbing their shin.
As he/she flattens you out pull his shin and go with the movement.
With his/her momentum you will be able to reverse them.
And quickly gain the mount.
If, they do not try to flatten you out after you grab the shin...
...swim your hand on the should under their arm, to their back.
Using your legs, hand on the shin and arm under hooked to lift them up over your head.
The hand on the back can now grab the toes.
Switch your feet.
The hand on the shin will now pull the knee in towards you.
Sweep...
...control your grips on his legs...
...and side control.

Very solid technique and great presentation! thank you sir!
Even with my gimpy left hand
I'm trying this one next class... but could'nt he just straighten his leg and base as soon as you try to grab his foot?
When in doubt the left hook comes out.

Having your foot grabbed like that is actually really hard to pull out of. The leg is not in a strong position. I use the same foot grab to do a low pass out of a half-butterfly, and I've not had anyone break my grip yet.
Very excited to try these sweeps, they make a nice pair.
When you have the ankle trapped if your driving towards him he can't post with that foot to stop the driving action.
If you are rolling him back over your body your pulling his weight closer to his body to make it easier to roll. You have to note how you are under his hips so he can't really use the legs.
Even if you miss both sweeps; you are so deep under him you can always scramble out to the knees; hence you have still escaped the position.
