Sambo Flying Armbar Alternative

Here is a video from a seminar i gave on Sambo counters. This is a variation on the sitting armbar that has worked for me. normally the flying armbar is faster and more reliable, but this variation breaks your opponents posture down in a way that it still often works even though its slower then a flying armbar.

  • the grip
  • grab your opponents lapel and grab on top of their forarm with your other hand. you will need them to be grabbing your lapel for this to work smoothly.
  • kick
  • post your leg that is on the same side of your hand that is gripping the lapel against the inside thigh of your opponents leg, also on that same side. make him lean over by pressing hard.
  • rotate
  • keep pressing on his leg with your foot as you lower your back to the mat and rotate toward his legs with your head.
  • block
  • let go of the lapel and reach under his FAR leg and use that to bring your head through to the other side.
  • spin
  • as you try to spin under your opponent will be forced to either flip over or go belly down. either way you will get a dominant position. in this example, my opponent flips over.
  • armbar
  • finish him!

I really like this one. In addition, if you like the 'spiderweb' style of armbar, you can hang onto the far leg and spin down right into the spiderweb, too.

Man love Reilly, very nice!
