2 x 4 Series - Armbar
![]() |
Here is a follow up to the 2x4 sweep that a few members have been asking for. The original '2x4' sweep can be found at: http://lockflow.com/article_view.php?id=613
The sweep was used when your opponent tries to turn back into you, the armbar can be used when your opponent does not turn back into you.

Eddie is in my closed guard
I turn onto my left hip and open my guard as I shove my inner right thigh into Eddie, forcing him to post his right hand
I reach my left hand under Eddie's right arm
I quickly lock my hands together as I trap Eddie's wrist to the left side of my neck
I shift to my right hip as I keep Eddie's arm locked tight, as I get to my hip I try to bring my right knee under Eddie's left armpit (see next Photo)
Here is another angle of Step 5
From here, I throw my left knee over Eddie's right shoulder and pinch my knees together
I finish this first armbar by driving my left knee downward as I lift Eddie's arm upward
another armbar option for the arm is to take Eddie's arm and put it on the other side of my head
I drop my left knee to the mat, and pull up on the arm as I drop my hips downward
If Eddie decides to roll out of the armbar...I turn with the roll
I follow the roll until my back hits the mat
I finish the armbar by throwing my left leg over Eddie's head and squeezing my knees together and arching my hips upward

the first inverted armbar caught one of my training buddies at a local show... after he was hit in the back of the head while being back mounted like six times ref suck
It's all a puzzle, isn't it, Joseph? Like a game of chess, perhaps. The pieces move, apparently aimlessly, but always towards one single objective: to kill the king. But who is the king in this game, Joseph? That is the question you must ask yourself.
Whoa, I learned this move and the roll last night, but without so much clarity. Thank you CombatChaz. Also, nice new tattoo.

Hey Chaz,
I like the way you combined the Inverted Armbar with the Swim Move.
You will get the Armbar one way or the other.

veeeeery nice.
will definitely give this a shot.
thats some classy stuff. i will try asap.
Awesome! The 2x4 was great enough, but seeing door #2 is kickass too.
Thanks Chaz! I'll have to give that one a few spins
I don't have to win every time, it doesn't bother me in the slightest to get tapped. So I'm able to learn the ins and outs without my ego getting in the way. - Eu

Do you think you could hit this as a counter to when your opponent uses an arm over defense to the guillotine?
Chaz looks very Humesque in this clip.

I have been trying to work this sweep/ armbar combo for a long time but I am missing something. From the way you have the grip in the picture: How are you keeping him down? Are you using downward pressure from your left wrist? Are you kind of twisting his arm toward your right or just pulling down on the arm? My biggest problem is keeping the guy from turning their wrist and getting out. I encounter this most of the time as I am going for the sweep. I know it is hard to tell me without seeing me but are there any common mistakes that you know of that I can be making? thanks
good to see it in reaction

Charlie, worked on a variation of this tonight a few times. We were working big gloves on top/bottom from closed guard, 30-40% punching just to work. From the bottom, keeping him broke down on me, bump to get the arm across like I would go for the armbar set-up normally, but then the last part of the 2x4 above (right at step 5), scoot out that side and directly into the straight arm lock. He even rolled and I went 'if they roll, blam' regular arm-bar.
Anyway, thanks! It was great and really added another attack from that side rather than just trying to slip out and take the back.
