2x4 Sweep

Dont ask me where I got this name from, it's along story. This is a tricky little sweep set up, that I have not seen very often.

here is a clip of me using this sweep at AFC #1 in Florida:

Here is a follow up, if they don't turn into you: http://lockflow.com/article_view.php?id=4205

  • Step 1
  • I have the closed guard
  • Step 2
  • I get the left underhook and lock my hands together
  • Step 3
  • I put my right elbow under Cole's right jaw and pull down on his right shoulder
  • Step 4
  • I shift to my left hip, placing my right shin across Cole's stomach and dropping my left foot to the outside of his right knee. I also keep pulling down on Cole's shoulder.
  • Step 5
  • Scissoring my right leg forward and my left foot backwards, I push my elbow into Cole's face driving his head upward (I could also take my right foot and insert a butterflyhook here for more leverage, as I did in the above video)
  • Step 6
  • I continue to scissor my legs and push cole's head until I tilt him over
  • Step 7
  • I finish by taking the mount position

This is the main sweep I teach. Although I call it "guard roll to mount" and the hand placement is slightly different as far as the forearm across the face.
While scrambling under your opponent, hipping out and getting the shin across the stomach, or ending up with the shin across, this is a must know IMO!!
Freaken' awsome Chaz!!!!

Love this one, had it done to me more than a few times when rolling with Chaz. thanks for giving away all the details (gets out notebook and grappling dummy Smile

forgot to rank it 5 stars and two thumbs up!

"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can" - John Wooden

glad you guys like it!

This is one of my fave guard sweeps..very nice variation Chaz, I usually try to grab the back of the head and back of the arm then go for the scissor. This will work better Smile

UNA RASPADA MUY VERSATIL. PODEMOS REALIZARLA TAMBIEN RODEANDO EL BRAZO DESDE ATRAS, DE MANERA QUE QUEDE BAJO NUESTRA AXILA. HAY QUE SUJETAR FUERTE EL BRAZO PARA QUE NO SAQUE EL CUELLO DEL BRAZO.

awesome, thats an excellent transition from gi to no gi for your basic scissor sweep. much better than just grabbing the neck and arm.

Sweet. I love it.

Great variation for controlling the opponents upper body during the sweep, I will definately give this a try.

"People sleep peaceable in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf" -George Orwell

One of my fav sweeps, I hope you guys are having good luck with it!

Newbie grappler here. Can't wait to try this out.

This is a great technique...just an add on... if you don't have one of your partner's limbs trapped, be wary of a heel hook when you set your shin across their stomach...

This is a great sweep. Nice.

cherry move!!

What doessn't kill me only makes me stronger.

nice this move is sick coach

Like others, I have always gone for the basic scissor sweep, whcih I love. But when I tried this variation, I had mixed results. When I underhooked and posted my forearm against their face, I then had trouble pushing on them to get enough space to slide my shin across their abdomen. One must note though that I am 6'2", could that possible be the reason since I am so tall that I have trouble creating enough space for this variation of the sweep?

Just the facts maam.

Joe, if you are having trouble getting space, really force their shoulder down to the mat, they'll think you're going for their back or gonna kick over for an armbar, so they posture up, when they do, you'll have enough room to slide your shin across. (hopefully Smile )

Alright, that sounds cool, I will have to try it. I guess when my shoulder gets better anyway, Im gonna be really rusty now when I can train again. (Not trying to make it sound like I was ever good, cause Im NOT!!!) lol

Just the facts maam.

its kinda weird to see your back w/o the tat

I go for this one all time and hit it with a high percentage

I pray, do yoga, meditate and still want to smack people

I like this one!!! I always did an arm lock before I rolled, but the shoulder is much better in this case.

good stuff.

from step 2 i have a system of sweep and reversals since i seen this i put it in my arsenal from this grip

The arm control seems like its a good way to keep them from basing out.

if its not grappling..i would love to throw the elbow rather than pushing it in step 5.

The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

Nice and well explained technique. Got to try this one.

looks a good one here, and you've got the arm set up for a nicely for an Americana

this sweep is trash, there are many more no-gi sweeps from guard that won't get you stacked on, try one of those

critical thinking

Alex, sorry you dont like it, I have used it in three pro MMA fights and it has worked well for me...If it doesn't work for you- don't use it. Instead of just going thru the site calling everthing trash, we'd love to see your techniques. also, I looked at your profile to see your experience level - but no info there. Let's keep this site positive please.

great sweep

Who will go for us, who shall I send. Then I said, "Here am I, send me!"

This is a sweep technique. For MMA I prefer the head and overhook method because in Step 3 if you don't get that shoulder pinned to your chest, you will be eating punches/elbows. Also, I like to switch from head control to the elbow in the face if my first sweep attempt was unsuccessful.

classic . forgot about this one for a long time.

I hate pajama clubs !

rename the scissor sweet ,lol ok but the controle is bad as your switching hip he is turning hand thumb up and pulling out ,try it its easy ,i know you all are trying to put new stuff up here but realy tear down your tech plz im shure it works on green wrestlers but so do alot of other bad tech ranked it a 3 cause might get 50 % of new guys

thanks for the rank and comments pro - have use it many time with some good success, including a couple higher level guys. -dont understand "scissor sweet"?,
turning the thumb up and pulling your arm out leads to a arm bar. (hopefully).

also prohooker - please fill out your bio on your profile page so the members can see you experience level and where your coming from on your ideas and techniques - also welcome to lockflow.

HOW DO YOU ARMBAR FROM STEP 4 BEFORE ARM COMES OUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT sorry for caps lol anyway try it like 50 times with a good wrestler and see what happens good idea is to test most things

Prohooker- I upload another technique on switching to the armbar, but I'm sure you'll hate it too. Tongue, still looking for your name so I can look you up ....

Rex's picture

Here Chaz I'm going to talk $hit about your techniques and then instead of suggesting what could be done to make them work better I'm going to say trying like a million times on somebody who has wrestled for 36 years to see if it works. Never mind you have used it once or twice fighting in the ring already. And to top it all off, I'm going to ignore my spell check. How you like them apples =p

"I try to walk the path of harmony but all I get is sharps and flats" - Rex

lol...

I've watched a season and a half of TUF and I agree this won't work on anyone good..... JK, thanks for another great technique.

ive used the 2x4 against countless wrestlers...

and hooker, nobody is trying to invent moves. even if a move is more effective against newer guys, doesnt make it an invalid move. so relax, this is a TECHNIQUE DATABASE. theres gonna be all kinds of things that will work or wont work against different opponents.

Neo's picture

I like how the shin is put on the side. I like to overhook instead of underhook because I like to go for an arm crank or chicken wing with my shin in their side. Of course the underhook has other options.

Neo's picture

Sorry, I missed a detail. I like to overhook the same side arm as the side my shin is in.

This is sooooooo cool i would have never thought about this move.Which lets me know that i need to stop kicking butts of army soldiers and come to a gym where i can get tested and learn something!!!!

i know you didnt see that one coming but it wouldnt have mattered cause your chin was high and your hands down away!

HAI GUYZ LETS INSULT TH1S SWEEP BECUZ CHAZ ONLY USED IT LIEK IN MMA FIGHTS AND AT TOP LEVEL SUB GRAPPLING COMPS LIEK ADCC BUT MY INSTRUCTER WHOE DOESNT KNOW SHIT SAIZ IT DONT WORK!

You're not drunk if you can lie on the ground without holding on.

^^^ Just had to make fun of those dumbasses who think they know shit.

Anyways, great sweep Chaz, thanks for posting it! I'll have to try it out later this week after finals are over.

You're not drunk if you can lie on the ground without holding on.

thanks for having my back guys! I didn't use this in adcc, but i've used it in several fights.. I will upload a video of it tonight.

ok, added the video to this technique - but it uploaded it again as a new technique!!! we'll enjoy ..... again!

Classic, everyone should know this move!

cool vid, thought this one was new and was shocked how fast you lost so much weight Wink

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"

I dont know what that "prohooker" guy is talking about (and is that name for catch wrestling or prostition i really am confused), i use this all the time against guys better than me... it hasn't failed me yet Smile But i am not a "pro" or even "am" fighter... and i think if someone is pulling a move off in MMA comps, its effective! kinda like the Achilies... people trash talk it all the time, but i use it and people tap. I will probably go for when when i make my MMA debut lol... hopefully it'll work... Thanks for the vid Chaz, and we always got your back!

my friend just made an observation... this move is similar to the MMA Spider gaurd i learned from Lockflow... i also have a variation of this too. But its only happened once, so i'll keep working on it, and with Alex3027 & Prohookers' permission, i will post it if its "effective." lol... sorry

I am a big fan of the scissor sweep and use it a lot in BJJ, so I'm always happy to see variations of a high percentage technique (for me anyway). Got MMA class tonight will try it out!!

Looks like u used a butterfly hook to sweep in that vid, good to see variations

of course, just remind me, and i'll be happy to practice it with you

I like this. Lo0ks pretty easy to do. Takes the keep it simple approach.

DAYYUM, I wish Chaz was my coach. That'd be so awesome.

You're not drunk if you can lie on the ground without holding on.

Hey Chaz, you should post some of your fights.

You're not drunk if you can lie on the ground without holding on.

i like transition from the gi scissor to the no gi....i like the shoulder grip a lot!

thanks for this Chaz. I usually use a flower or ball sweep but I tried this last night and it worked great

Thunder, i have never heard of either of those sweeps man... you should post them so Prohooker can diss on 'em and i can use 'em to sweep my wrestling buddies with ease lol

Thunder, glad it worked for ya!!!

i am pretty inexperienced, and i know that this sweep works, in addition there are a few variations once you get your hips and legs scissored. More importantly how do we see more videos of the guy executing this move, he is an animal!!!! lol thanks charlie!

Assasin Al - most of mine are on VHS there a few running around on the internet, here is the finish of one from a long time ago:

nice!!!

ha ha..nice Chaz..who says TKD doesn't work? It's all in the set up.

It's not bad if you do it quick enough.

But it's a lot easier too overhook the left arm, and pull it in. so they don't have there arm free to brace the sweep.

A brother in Christ.

i'll have to work on this one a little

Hey Chaz..just letting you know I used your 2x4 sweep last night. I hit it as soon as I was taken down from a double leg.

Love the move, high% imo, then fall back for an achilles lock

Being attacked is like being asked a question- if you answer right you won't get asked anymore questions.

yeah thunder!!!

lindsay..what?? fall back into achilles lock?? from the mount?? why and how would you do that?

Awesome sweep 5 stars

Here's something I just noticed....the announcer thinks this is an armbar attempt...that's how sneaky the move it. Sweet stuff.

Still love the spinning back heel Chazzy!! That's a "wheel" kick right?

Wait. Why is the it 2x4? I have to ask, sorry.

2 normal counters with 4 possible options.....

what are the others? this is interesting stuff...

Great technique. I'm pretty new to the sport but I love the way MMA makes chess seem extreamly simple and easy. This sport will out last everything.

Great technique. People never realize how complex this sport is. I chalenge anyone to find something more complicated.

Pain is the feeling of weakness leaving one's body.

Great simple sweep. I frequently try to get underhook control to get to the guy's side but I much prefer not to be on the bottom so this sweep fits right into my game.

This "shoulder crush" grip puts a tremendous ammount of pressure on your uke, I was taught this sweep with the gi and it works a high percentage of the time Me likeie

glad you guys are linking this, I used it (and some of the follow ups) toaday a few times. I try to add another technique in the series tomorrow.

Worked it last night!!
Pleople liked the control of the grip instead of under hooks, etc!!!

Wow, it seems really disrespectful to trash a presentation of a technique. I understand there might be some really experience guys on here but it seems like they want to prove it. I'm not an expert at grappling by any means but I got a good base and I'm strong as hell and Chaz has swept me countless times and I got atleast 30 lbs on him. Try not to trash someone's presentation. There are so many variations and so many instrutors that some of the technique's might be the same. Most likely not on purpose. Just my .02

hey haters....it will work for you too if you use it while there is pressure coming towards you...if guys are based and leaning back or upright it won't work- You should probably roll before talking s**t on one of the most tested moves in grappling!

I want to know what the 2 normal counters and 4 possible pathways are!

Awsome Technique.  I roll with a guy who was a collegate wrestler, and he is really tough to sweep but I stuck with it and once I switched from the shin across to the elevator hook I hit it!

I just won my first competition match ever thanks to this article!

Hansa ans AdamBomb - you guys make me happy!

Great sweep coach. I'm gonna use this on my daughter. Because it would work on a high level fighter. But she is pretty tough so it might not work I'll let you know.

LOL
