5 Step Armbar

Here is a nice armbar set up from the closed guard. As you grapple more experienced grapplers - you will need more ways to vary your attacks. Here is a video of the technique, with the step by step below:

  • Start
  • I start with Nate in my closed guard
  • Step 1
  • I bring my guard up high, under both of Nate;s armpits
  • Step 2A
  • For the first part of step 2, I throw my left leg over Nate's right shoulder. I try to get the back of my knee tight around his shoulder
  • Step 2B
  • To finish step 2, I throw my right foot over my left foot. I then squeeze my knees together as I pull my heels down.
  • Step 3
  • I control both of Nate's wrist with my right hand, as I shove Nate's head towards the trapped shoulder.
  • Step 4
  • I quickly throw my left leg over Nate's head and pull my heel downward and spin my upper body to my right. I often tell my students that this motion is similar to the way a skateborder pushes off the ground to get motion.
  • Step 5
  • For the final step, I squeeze my knees together, pull my left heel down as I arch my hips upward and pull down on the wrist

nice I hope I can remember this Laughing out loud

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"

heheh..when u can pull it of in a sec, ppl will think it's a 1 step armbar... =p

Nice tight game!!!

i like it

Franklin Roosevelt once said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Well guess what, i am fear.

i use this armbar in high guard all the time. the only thing i do differently is that i trap both of his arms by reaching over with my right ran on my left hip. then i grab my right shin with left hand incase he tries to stack. usually i wait a second and let them panic before the submission Cool

Blood is nothing but red sweat

to help it out.. when the back of your knee is on his shoulder, try and force his shoulder to the ground on his side using your legs. if you get good at it you don't even need to use your hands to place your leg over his head.

CAUTION: Random Acts of Violence

This technique is money. I do a slight variation where I hook the leg with my right hand, that way I can go right for a flower sweep. Either way, I love the basic moves. They may not be flashy, but they're reliable.

Zen im right there with ya!

wow, that looks pretty hard. i'll try remember it

This is bread and butter. We call it a "push/climb/pass armbar" But exactly the same thing.

Wow....I know what I'm going to surprise my training buddy with tomorrow. I agree with MadMike...i saw the vid and It looked a lot like a 1 or 2 step armbar.....looks fun, and painful

Great tech...i was taught to do it a little differently though...in step 3 we pull the head down instead of pushing it towards the shoulder....i takes away some of the space for him to attempt an escape...also before bringing the left leg over in steps 3 & 4....placing the right foot in between the shoulder blades a pulling down helps prevent them from posturing up and also takes away some space for them to escape

very important in steps 3-4-5 to have your right leg just below his armpit, kind of hooking his shoulder, to break his posture and keep him unbalanced. IMO the key to the position, with the hip movement

This is my favorite set up for the armbar, makes it a lot harder for them to pass your guard when you try for the armbar.

sorry...i meant to say on the shoulder blades, basically the same position it will be in when you finish the arm bar

haha I try to do this! doen't always happen, but I try!

Do you have to have wrist control the whole time for this technique? Because it seems like it would be hard to control their posture without using your hands.

This technique is pretty much awesome.

Not much else to say...

You're not drunk if you can lie on the ground without holding on.

Pretty easy to get for me on the other beginners, they don't feel the armbar coming and Its easier for me to get into position. Thanks

It looks like it could do some damage. I will have to try and remember this one.

Awesome. It's different than the one I usualy see (and get caught in), but it still looks effective a fairly simple to complete.

i'm going to teach this tonight! thank you!

i like it.... its seems simple yet effective

i like the set up =) ...where you bring the guard up high... it kinda reminds me of that one fight in 06 where rener gracie fights that tkd black belt and puts him in armbar from the guard right away

( ((Chris)) )

in step 2b there is a shoulder lock available that can make this a nice little flow series
i like this armbar

Utilizing a high guard regularly makes this seem pretty cake. In step 3 you even have a shot at a triangle (my fave) if he decides to stack. Also possibly an omoplata if your feeling squirmy.

If he says so, then it must be the case. He probably knows better. Let him try to take advantage of it, and And I will do my thing
