Note: There's been a lot of discussion over the name of this technique. When I worked with Papo in Hawaii, he called it an Anaconda Choke. English is not Papo's first language, and he could have easily mixed it up. The name really doesn't matter. The technique matters.
I was fortunate enough to train with "Papo" Soñe while at B.J. Penn's Academy in Hilo, Hawaii. Papo is from the Dominican Republic and instructed classes while Jay Penn was in England for B.J.'s title bout against Joe Stevenson.
Papo was nice enough to let me record one of his techniques, and the academy was nice enough to let us use their facility to film and photograph this technique. So check out the "My Gym Show" over at bjpenn.com for more techniques from the Big Island.
Papo and Poia are shown here demonstrating an anaconda choke as a counter to someone striking while inside of your guard.

so sweet!!!
Very, very nice!

cool. i'm going to try this out next sparring session. isn't it more of a brabo than an anaconda, though?

Cool, but that's actually a D'arce choke.

nice! another place to hit the D'Arce

I figured the name might be an issue, and Papo wasn't sure what to call it himself.
That being said, the name isn't super important. You can call it whatever you want. Papo called it an Anaconda so that's how I wrote it up.
It's a sweet move no matter what you call it.

I've actually ended up here off the regular darce/brabo/whatever from the sprawl, and have found it quite difficult to finish. That may be more due to my squeeze then anything else, though. On the other hand, this is a great setup, and if you can't finish from here, you can always work your legs back out, and try to finish from some other position.
This is a awesome set-up!
With no doubt in my mind joe will say D'arce at some point during any given UFC match.
i know you didnt see that one coming but it wouldnt have mattered cause your chin was high and your hands down away!
awesome
Franklin Roosevelt once said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Well guess what, i am fear.
Cool. This can be attempted from 1/2 guard aswell very nicely... you can also sneakly fall off the turtle into this position and lock up in half guard with your arms in a slight variation which often catches the opponent off guard. I actually saw it on BJs website a while ago being taught in the techniques section this way.
Very slick. You can even swing an omoplata if you can't secure the choke. Even if you don't want to go for the omoplata, theres a pretty nice setup for a sweep. So much potential!

Nice technique, nice to see guys out at different academies and swapping information - got a seminar at my club today so will try this out later!
nice...hey maybe you could mix that with some rubber guard stuff. You know get the guy's head down get mission control, overhook the left arm, release your leg, and when they posture up you hit the d'arce, scoot out and roll like a regular d'arce?
thanks Marshal for a sweet sub..and thanks to BJ, Papo & Poia for allowing this to be filmed. I like that people are out there sharing their stuff!
I like it . I'l l work that this week at the gym.
man I can't tell you how many times I tried this move and ended up in a side choke
. I did manage to get it after awhile

dude. im definately gunna try that haha
Haha that's one of those submissions that's going to piss off the guy in your guard.
I'd be so angry with myself if I got caught in that, even though I know I'd fall for it.
Excellent stuff!! I really like anaconda chokes, i cant wait to try this from guard.
Good technique.
Very kool
Wow..I thought that Denis Kang's Anaconda Choke was sweet!
Really like this one.
That was great.
Pain is the feeling of weakness leaving one's body.
thats a darce not an anaconda the anaconda is on the other side.
dont relieve pressure tell u hear the popping of cartilage or the crapin of there pants
The d'arce vs. anaconda choke name thing is getting old, real old.
Yes, this is probably called a d'arce, but Papo is from the Dominican Republican, maybe they call it an Anaconda Choke there?
Also, Papo told me to write it up as an Anaconda Choke. Do you see that guy? Would you argue?
-Marshal
i'll give it a try

Awesome, I'm gonna slap this on someone tomorrow!

Great technique. Don't sweat brabo / darce. There are both arm triangles. Just like omoplata and kimura are shoulder locks. Lighten up. Five Stars.
