Arm Pin Pass with Reverse Hammerlock

This is a nasty little setup I often use when I find myself in someone's closed guard. I see the pass and the submission quite often, but rarely used together. Anyway, one day it occurred to me to try them together and it's been successful ever since.

Another great thing about this technique is that once the arm is trapped, there are several good options to choose from. One may decide to stay in the guard and pound away. Another person may decide to pass the guard and then continue their pursuit of victory via strikes. Finally, someone else may attempt to gain a submission from the unorthodox position.

Here is a crude video of the tech. in action.
Listen to his arm pop around the 13 second mark ;-p

  • Step 1: In the closed guard
  • I begin in Micheal's closed guard.
  • Step 2: Wrist control
  • I move my left hand down his right arm, and grip his wrist.
  • Step 3: Getting to my feet
  • I jump to my feet so I can lift his lower back from the ground.
  • Step 4: Passing the arm underneath
  • I shove his arm under his back and swap his wrist from my left hand to my right.
  • Step 5: Tenderizing
  • I return to my knees, trapping his arm below his back. From here I choose to soften him up a bit before I attempt a pass on his guard. Some people may be content to stay here and blast away on their opponent's face.
  • Step 6: Opening the guard
  • I grind my left elbow into the soft spot on the inside of Micheal's thigh. Anyone who has experienced this knows it is painful. Now with Micheal's guard opened, I can continue with the pass.
  • Step 7: Passing the guard
  • I now slide my left knee and shin over his thigh, pinning it to the mat.
  • Step 8: Gaining the mount
  • Since I have Micheal's right leg pinned with my shin, it makes things much easier for me to slide my right leg through and attain the mount. If I did not keep it pinned, then he would be able to pull half guard on me. Also, remember his arm has been trapped beneath his back the entire time. Please pay no attention to Micheal's little, bothersome dog.
  • Step 9: Rolling to my back
  • I initiate the transition to the concession hold by rolling to my left into the guard position. I maintain a tight grip on Micheal's wrist to better pull him into my guard.
  • Step 10: Reverse Hammerlock
  • Finally, I finish the technique by reaching with my left arm and grabbing his defenseless limb. I think you can figure out the rest.

Step 8 is the part where you beat on Chris Horodecki's face, right?

lol at step 8!

What and why do you say Chris? Is it cause he has a baby face?

Just the facts maam.

nice thanks for the tech Laughing out loud, love the dog!!!!

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"

this is why:

I love this all the way to step 8. I use this all the time to break guard but almost everytime I roll to my back, because of sweat or whatever, I lose the arm and I just lost a superior position. Step 9 - 10 is a low % technique in my opinion.

Wow, really??? I have never once lost the arm once I have rolled to the back. But I am usually going vale tudo so the glove might keep the hand from slipping.

And I remember seeing him get his face beat on now. That was nasty. Reminds me of the time they let the 2nd Penn Hughes fight go on for as long as it did.

This pass has been money for me, though since I'm a smaller guy I can never force the wrist down to the side like that. They always muscle out.

So, I step up on foot, and bait the flower sweep. When they go to under hook my leg, I drag it back and trap their hand between my calf and thigh. Then It's pretty easy to control it and pass it behind the back the way you showed here.

The video is pretty dark though.

Yes, the video is too dark. I almost did not put it up. But, I decided to go ahead anyway. I don't know why the camera was making everything so dark. I thought the room was well lit.
Sorry

Love it! I use the arm pin from time to time, and yet for some reason never even thought to give up the mount for a kimura type armlock in guard. I don't see why it wouldn't work in mma, although you may take the chance of losing the arm in the roll and your back on bottom getting punched in the mouth... otherwise in straight grappling situations this is a great way to submit!

thanks for the technique!

for whatever reason, i never use this pass, i know it to be a good one though.
i have caught people in this submission however.

nice work.

This submission reminds me of those holds in high school wrestling where the ref would be warning you not to bend the arm any further, but now in grappling I finally have the freedom to crank that bad boy to the tap!

I like this one = ) couldent you also use this pass to set up a kimura? I have read about this pass on here like 10000 times but I have never used it...I think it is time that I did

Hermes Trismegistus... hey.. we worked that last night!!!

What's a Hermes Trismegistus? Is that another name for this pass or submission?

Just the facts maam.

LOL... no, no! Hermes Trismegistus put up that gif, we worked that!

Ok I seen his gif I put up. I don't even know hoe to put up gifs or how to make them. Cool. I like hwo the ref let the fight go on for a while. You still reffing those IFL fights Chaz? Who's fight did you ref that time?

Just the facts maam.

Joe, I just reffed the one in washington state.

i would stop at step 8 and go for GnP.... rolling onto your back for a sub finish seems too risky.

Yea, some GnP from step 8 would cause a great deal of anguish for the opponent. I have just always preferred submissions cause, well, I just like them Smile I will have to try the punching from the mount next time I get that position.

Just the facts maam.

I like that ,Nice move

If you've been in one battle no matter what the out come of that battle you need not fear a hundred battles....

I'm going to try this out tomorrow during training. Thanks.

"All the Way- And then some!"

I like this move as a distractor. However was reversed quickly at step 10. My opponent in Micheals position rolled to his left. That trapped my right arm underneath him. He then grabbed a high arm lock on my left arm which I had posted to pull my arm from underneath.

I have also been rolled in step ten. Actually, I was rolled just last week in step ten. All it did to me was put me right back into the mount just like in step eight. So, instead of letting go of the arm I held it, and rolled over to my back again to finish the lock.

Just the facts maam.

Also, from step 9 one could also do a move called a straight jacket. I'm sure some people have probably seen it on submissions 101. It's an awesome little choke. Check it out!

Nice we call that one the handcuff. You can also finish the sub. from mount by reaching behind him and grabbing his forearm with your free hand, drive your hips into him and pull up on the arm like you are deadlifting.

Solid bjj. I remember getting caught in this when I was a white belt wearing a gi by a 230 pnd blue belt ( I was 160 at the time ).

That was the longest 5 minutes defending a pass ever !

Yea, JMall... Very rarely when I get the arm behind the back do I not finish the hold. It's one of my go-to's when I am in the closed guard. Most people are right handed so, I like to grab for their left hand cause it is generally weaker... and I grab it with my right of course and it's my strongest. Also, instead of finishing with the reverse hammerlock, you can opt to finish with a straightjacket (not the rubberguard version).
One time I got someone's arm behind the back and he managed to catch me in a triangle. But, he was unable to finish cause I still had his arm, but I was not definitely not gonna let it go. So, we were stuck indefinitely Smile It was a funny situation.
