Arm trap reversal from half guard

Here's a cool reversal i have been playing with lately, ive had pretty good success with it, so hopefully you will too! we will be starting out in your Half Guard position.

  • Half Guard
  • Half Guard- I'm on my hip, and Nate has his underhook on my left side.
  • 2
  • I use my right hand to control Nate's left arm.
  • 3
  • I'll then kick my left leg over Nate's back, as far across as I can. Make sure to keep your right leg over your opponent's right leg to keep them controlled.
  • 4
  • Next, I use my right hand to push Nate's left arm while I catch it with my leg that's over his back. Be sure to keep a grip on your opponent's left wrist to keep control of that arm.
  • 5
  • In order to reverse him, I need to slide back under, making sure to keep a tight grip. When I slide under, I need to claim the butterfly hook with my right leg.
  • 6
  • Now I will extend my left leg and use my right leg to elevate his left, like a butterfly sweep.
  • 7
  • Here's another angle. I now use my left leg to sweep him.
  • Triangle setup
  • If your sweep isn't enough, you can also work for a triangle choke from here. First you release your grip and use your right leg to step over your opponent's left shoulder.
  • Triangle step 2
  • Now grab his shoulder and head, and begin to roll him on top. As soon as you get him up you need to lock your legs around his head and shoulder.
  • Triangle step 3
  • Lock in that triangle!

Slick!!!

Hhhhhhello? Smile

very cool - nice stuff!

Nice, I don't sweep the guy like you do, but ironically, I myself decided, "Hmmm I could use my leg like a stockade on the guy!" So I just do that and stay on my back to transition to triangle. I love this, slick slick slick. The guy i did it to said straight up, "This is Nasty, man, this is tricky"

So just to clarify, you don't let go of his wrist (left/trapped) until after step 7?

good stuff!!!

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"

Could you clarify what you mean in step 4 when you say "Be sure to keep a grip on your opponents head"? In the picture it doesn't look like you have anything on his head, and it seems like both your arms are tied up controlling his arms.

sorry, i was in a hurry when i uploaded it. its fixed now, i needed to keep control of his left wrist when my right knee goes through.

ok tried this today, it's a lot harder then I thought it would be. You make it look so easy Laughing out loud

that is so awesome. im definently learning this

Franklin Roosevelt once said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Well guess what, i am fear.

showed it to a friend today and he tapped his next partner with it live turned the grip into a muscle lock!!

nice sweep i have used this alot ,dont like the finish but hey i like the top

How do you stop the guy on top flattening you out on step 1?

He has the underhook and there is nothing stopping him driving his weight down onto you.

worked on this today and came up with a 5 move flow off of it.... all I can say is SWEET love this move!!!

zafh- first off thanks for the comment.

secondly,Yes he can flatten out when you do this technique, but if he does, you can always take the back or use you r active half guard to move to something else. just like any other technique on here, you opponents initial reaction to whatever your set up is, will dictate which move you decide to attack. this technique isnt the best idea for every scenerio, but i have had good luck with this technique so far. thanks again for the comment

I've seen Shinya Aoki go straight to the triangle from step 3.

nice!!

SWEET!!!

I've found it works fine except on people who have a stocky build where they have very short arms and a wide torso.

But nearly every time i do it i don't even need to do the sweep since everyone complains of a bicep slicer haha.

CAUTION: Random Acts of Violence

i've seen a variation to the arm trap then sweep but this is a first from seeing an arm trap into a triangle. very nice. i like...
im definitely adding this one into my arsenal.

thank you Bawajiwe

Blood is nothing but red sweat

Glad you like it Smooth steve!

nice2...

The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

Pulled this off 2 times today Laughing out loud sweeeeet and the guy was about 180lbs Laughing out loud

cool sweep im just having trouble sliding back under and regaining the half butterfly. at that point i pretty much am stuck. any suggestions? i am finding that once in step 4 i get a mean bicep slicer brewin'...so its ok.

I will be trying this one tonight.

5000 posts = unicorn status There is only room for one Toby Mcquire, and that is me: Jake Jilenhol.

I mustve missed this technique when it was posted. Love it! The sweep itself is brilliant and the triangle follow up is too cool!

The technique by itself is great. I think an easier way to get it for everyone out there having trouble would be.... say your on bottom with fullguard, you catch the guy in a kimura but he is using strength and trying to tuck his arm under his knee to defend. Instead of turning it into a battle of strength and waiting, you have the dominant position and he is expecting the Kimura... so try to transition to this sweep! Even if it fails he may just end up giving you the arm back in the process of defending the sweep!

Dude that shit is sick. You can get into so much other shit too. Especially if you've read the Eddie Bravo's book. I'm defintaly trying this one out today.

It's ok to be afraid as long as fear doesn't control you.

thanks bawa..thats one of my go-to's also. I also use a similar one..go go plata into sweep.

thanks guys! check out my new one if you get a chance its probably my favorite

learned how to do this one standig up at a rumina sato seminar from a over under clinch you grab the arm thats under your overhook with boyh hands pin it to his side .heres the hard part your sposed to fed your leg up into his elbow pit then u can pull guard and aply triangle or swep or u can trip him onto his back with the leg thats in his arm it was really hard to do but rumina made look easy

You can hit a similar sweep by reaching your left arm over to trap his left arm.

This variation is great for people with short legs or who lack flexability.
