Carousel Mount Escape
![]() |
This technique was submitted by London, England based Lockflow.com member Superbeast. In a email to Lockflow Superbeast says:
"I call it a carousel mount escape due to the fact you spin around to escape. I taught it to myself when I was still a white belt as I had lots of trouble getting guys off me using conventional elbow to the knees escapes and always had trouble rolling back to put my feet on a guy's biceps to attempt a rolling back escape. I've showed it previously to black belts Roberto Atalla and Murilo Rupp who also had not seen anything similar before, so I think this may be completely original."

I am mounted and defending myself.
I bring my knee up and catch it by gripping my hands together.
I pull my ankle to the middle of my opponent's belly. I do not put it the full way across his waist or further up his body as it can put me at risk of being heelhooked. However this step can serve to bait your opponent into believing one is easily available.
I put my hand out to the side to provide base for the next step.
I extend my leg, turn my hips to the side and sit up a little bit until I can rotate them so that they are facing the floor. As I do this, I catch his ankle to set up footlock.
I kneel up and sit on the back of my opponent's thighs. Squeezing my knees together to keep his legs pinned, I use my free hand.
I finish the achilles lock by securing my grip and leaning back.

No I did!
It's worked for me on and off for about 18 months now since I first started using it. I have some variations of leglocks from this escape that I am going to try send in next weekend.
Cool! I had some kids try this out on each other today and it was working pretty good. The only problems we cam across was getting arm-barred while the were trying to grab their own knee, and then the other person just blocking them from getting their foot up in the first place. Seemed to work pretty good though!

I am able to catch the back of my knee with the hand on the same side of my body and sometimes use my forearm wedged in their abs to push them back to make space to put my shin in (I know I'm not pushing my forearm into his abs in step 2 but that's largely because he was allowing space for the photo to be taken), but I just wanted the photos to be clear and demonstrate the basics of the technique. There are a few submissions the person in mount can counter with which I'll try send in, although if you try bringing your leg up with just the one hand in the back of the knee, the arms won't be waiting for a spin around armbar. Normally I go for it when the person mounting me actually has his hands up above my shoulders after I've attempted to buck them off but trying to demonstrate it from that position wouldn't have made it very clear in photos.
This escape is shown on one of Roy Harris' tapes and also on the Leglocks.com tapes. Roy finishes it with a heelhook though, and A.J. Comparetto finishes it with that, and alternatively, a straight ankle lock lying on his left side.
Really? Damn. I should try have a look at those then.
Superbeast, can't wait for the follow-ups!
Now that looks like an effective move even if just ending in an achillies lock. COOL!
This sweep can be done from half-guard also. I've never seen it from full mount, good lookin out superbeast, this one's a keeper!!!

I have gotten out of a mount like this before, but you must be very careful.... IF the guy on top catches on to this, he will just grab your leg and get you in a heel hook.... Especially if it is with a gi.... But this is a nice move if you are flexible and very fast to execute.
does it hurt if the opponent leans fwd in step 4...???
The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

this is weird ive done this when i first started jiu-jitsu and i didnt know it was an actual move
MADMIKE, it does hurt if you are not that flexible, you can take pressure off if they decide to move forward by tweaking your body to your left, or which i think is a better option, grab your ankle, leg with one or two arms and move it as one unit... THis is a lot harder for them to control than you just moving your leg.
been playing with this a bit lately, starting to like it..
wow sooo much wrong with this ,nice half boston see ya on yer face lol back up onto his lower back, tis can be done but way better
i've tried that when my opponents are standing but i never tried it while they're mounting me... im gonna try this. thanx!
