Cobra Choke

Here is a choke that I picked up from Victory Belt's "Karo Parisyan's Judo for Mixed Martial Arts"- This is a great choke from what I call the "Total Hold Down" position. This grip also has some great Armbar and Triangle follow-ups.

  • Step 1
  • Buck has mounted Jack
  • Step 2
  • Jack goes to push Buck off
  • Step 3
  • Buck uses his left arm to push Jack's right arm across his chest
  • Step 4
  • Buck drops his chest over Jack's trapped arm, then grips Jack's right wrist with his right hand
  • Step 5
  • Buck reaches under Jack's neck with his left arm and secures a grip on Jack's right wrist
  • Step 6
  • To make room for his other hand to slide in, Buck steps up on his right root as he leans to his left...
  • Step 7
  • Buck slides his right hand thru the opening he created and under Jack's trapped arm and grips his own left forearm making a tight vice around Jack's neck
  • Step 8
  • To finish the choke, Buck drops his weight as he forces his right elbow down to the mat.

one of my favorite chokes.i use to do it all the time. to the point i stopped doing it because i was using it way to often so i could focus on other things.
also the arm is hooked deep.if you get bucked off you can trans righ to a arm bar or whatever you want if you hang onto that arm

Nice!!

Hhhhhhello? Smile

This is one of my favorites as well. There are only a couple of subs that I hit more often.

one of the best things to go for or Arm Triangle or short arm scissor

It's all a puzzle, isn't it, Joseph? Like a game of chess, perhaps. The pieces move, apparently aimlessly, but always towards one single objective: to kill the king. But who is the king in this game, Joseph? That is the question you must ask yourself.

In steps 6 and 7, it looks like the guy on the bottom (Jack) could push on the top guys right leg with his left arm and bring his own left leg in to recover half guard.

Is there something specific you can do to prevent this, or is the idea to jsut do it quickly enough that he doesn't have enough time to accomplish that?

I like armwraps alot so I use this any chance I get...if for nothing else than to make them roll to their side and I can switch to an arm bar.

Also, Adrian, you can pretty much finish this halfguard with little adjustments...same for side control. You just kind of lean your weight in at an angle instead of stright down in mount.

Also, you can switch it up if they get their arm back over their head to an anaconda vice. (its on the internetz if youre not sure what that is.)

no, at least generally not. jack can push away with his legs and it will relieve most of the pressure. plus buck would be asking to get armbared.

Thing is you can attack with this thing 2 ways...either as a blood choke : attack sides and squeeze(which I think is hard) or as a throat crusher: forearm rolls across thrachea...which produces a tap really fast cause it hurts and scares the guy usually.

but being in their guard lets them push away and you trying to do this from your guard is hard, you really can't get much pressure...you can, but its really tricky.

i love this site! i always had problems wit this choke cuz when i got that, i would squeeze my arms and if they fight it, i'll get tired quickly. so i should just cut my forearm across their throat...i like it!

Sweet!!

Yea, if you look @ Ken Shamrock's Inside the Lion's Den book he actually calls this one a arm triangle. I know I was confused as to what was really a arm triangle for the longest cause of that book Wink

Just the facts maam.

Dont wanna choke em, unleash the GNP as well. I love that position.

Like the technique, use it a lot but from the S mount, I feel I have more control with it than from normal mount, feel u can be attacked when you lift the knee off the floor.

What are you calling the S mount? Side mount, side control? Or is it a variation of true mount?

Awesome!

This is a very good choke!

Snap or tap your choice!

i used this last week, but i didnt have the other arm in. i was able to pull the wrist farther back und the head, and used my chest to push down on the outside of the bicep, to finish the choke

My instructor told me to keep the arm around the back of the head flat on the ground. Helped me a lot.
