Electric Chair Back Sweep
![]() |
The Back Sweep from the Electric Chair is a counter-counter attack.
After you have whipped-up to your side from the Lockdown with double underhooks you have a number of options to sweep your opponent. One real nice option is the Electric Chair.
If your opponent is hip to the Electric Chair they may try to counter by stepping the leg that is at your shoulder in front of you and land in side control. If you are not prepared for this they could pass your guard.
Below is a sweep that you can use if your opponent tries to counter by stepping over. I used this sweep in May of 2008 in the Hungarian Submission Wrestling Championships.

Here Jason Mallory has Patrik Bogyo in his half guard with double underhooks and the Lockdown locked down.
Next you whip-up to your side while maintaining the lockdown with your left arm holding the underhook tight. At this point if your opponent bases with his left leg you can go for the Electric Chair.
As you roll under your opponent you want to lock your hands at his knee with his shin trapped between your right shoulder and right side of your head.
If during the scramble you are not able to trap your opponent's shin they may be able to ...
Step the leg in front of you in an attempt to pass your guard. Immediately switch your grip and lock your opponent's leg to your chest. All the while maintaining the lockdown.
Once you have their leg trapped to your chest with the lockdown on you start to roll to their backside. This transition of switching grips and going back the other way has to be fast so they don't get away.
Once you take them backwards it is pretty much a done deal. They may try to post out with their hand but they will not be able to fight against the leverage of your whole body.
With the lockdown still on you sit up which brings your opponent's left leg up in the air.
Next you get on top and grab head & arm control with or without his leg in. You can let go of the lockdown at this point as you get on top.
From here all your have to do is free your left leg by switching your hips and then ...
You have side control.

Love this tech Jason. I use it all the time off a failed electric chair. Thanks for posting it
Thanks JM!
This is a common counter-counter off the failed electric chair sweep. Mosty common with my beginning students. Because on step 3, you shouldn't lock your hands at the knee and be all stretched out. It's a much tighter position and possible submission if you have your knee's close to your chest and lock your hands around the thigh as close as possible to his hip.
I learned from Hermes Franca that step six can be prevented if the top guy immediately goes for the underhook on the bottom guys right arm.
24 wins! Dominic Cruz better watch out!
I respect Hermes Franca but if you actually try the technique and get into step 6 you will see that the top guy underhooking the bottom guys right arm will not stop the sweep. Too much momentum and leverage at that point.

I respectfully disagree.... and I have actually tried the technique.

Does anyone know if the electric chair submission is legal in competition? I used it once in a Gi class and got the tap but I was told after by the instructor that it wasn't legal. Is it legal in No Gi?
It was legal at the 2008 Hungarian Submission Wrestling Championships run by Max Carvalho of Gracie Barra.

Don't know about tournaments like Abu Dhabi.
