Erik Paulson Breaks The Lockdown

The "Lockdown", known more generically as the "Scorpion Lock" has become a very popular and effective base of operations from the Half Guard. On three separate occasions I asked Sensei Paulson how he would counter this style of half guard and this was perhaps his most thorough, set of options.

In the future, I revisit Breaking the Lockdown and try to consolidate a couple of the other options shown during other sessions with Sensei Paulson.

Now check it out and enjoy this killer set of Leg Locks, brought to you exclusively by Taking It To The MMAT!

Paulson rules!

His name is Erik Paulson!

I don't know what it is about Erik Paulson's style, but he makes me love grappling all over again. He just shows so many options in that flow style, and I do love leglocks!

Big ups to the Indian Death Lock! Vince Fileds teaches a version of the IDL after falling to your side, and it's a little easier to perform also.

roy harris showed us something similar last year.

IDL - whoot!

It's just the blues, 'Molly' the Blues; swirling around my head like your dreams in Dorothy's shoes. I'm somewhere over the rainbow (waiting) for you.

And I am very proud to call him Sensei!

A huge thanks and apology to the guys in my gym Wink.

Hey guys, does anyone have any links to video on the falling side IDL by Vince Fileds or Harris or anyone for that matter? I'd love to see it.

I looked it up on youtube and came up with some pro wrestling stuff which I think might be what your talking about.

can't wait to embrass some lockdown with this...

Amazing

catch wrestling is king

i just found so many new things i want to try from that

that kneebar tho is my favorite thing to do when my opponents have a lockdown on me, i got shown it and use it constantly when im rolling, why pass guard when i can submit him from there

my training center

Holy cow. That was incredible. I get stuck there often. I can't wait to start trying some of those techniques.

I will roll with anyone, regardless of their skill level, age, gender or weight.

I would rather lose by one point then win by one hundred, for in that loss I will learn much and in that victory I will learn little.

One other note about something I came across while playing with these. Being as weak and small as I am, I almost always have to turn on my side before catching the IDL. But when guys use a "Whip Up", if you time it right, the IDL is considerably easier to catch.

going to play with those leglocks!

hard sparring session is like a cold shower in a warm day. It feels good.

hey Brian, i was wondering what the IDL standed for?

IDL , Indian death lock.
There is also a very sweet set up for it from head & arm when he manages to triangle your back leg.
Hats off to Mr Paulson for giving such a detailed (and entertaining) demo.

great move. i tried a couple of them last night. i couldn't slip it out like in the first move, and when i tried to stand up, i walked right into old school, but the last move, where you switch your hips over, it worked like a charm. i tried it twice and although i couldn't get the ankle lock because of sweat, i wound up in the mount. it was so easy, i'll definately be using it again.

Pretty cool counter. Paulson is awesome.

Be real careful with guys that you like, tho, with the IDL. I have tweaked somebody just showing them how to do it at almost no speed. If the guy on bottom isn't pretty flexible it gets ugly in a hurry. I have pulled it off live on multiple occasions, and I am not very good so it for sure works fellas. Great great vid.

When Chuck Norris' urine tested positive for steroids he responded "What do you think they make steroids from?"

I use Lockdown all the time. I've had partners do this to me to learn it. Today I was at a school crosstraining. It was mainly a Jiu Jitsu school so I knew the guys would be good. Ikept using Lockdown techniques on them. One guy decided to put it on me. I immediatly went to the IDL never thinking it would work. I went to push down on the knees and the buzzer went off.

So close!

By the way, the lockdown/whip-up came up today at the gym again... And I'd worked these gems from Paulson... Joy Smile.

Oh ooh crap, tap tap tap. I chuckled.
