Half Guard Knee Slice

Here's a nice pass to counter ones Half Guard. I call the "Half Guard Knee Slice". This
tech is a great pass. I use it all the time and it's highly effective. It's very hard to stop.
Most people with strong legs can give you a little trouble at first but when you find the
right leverage, it's cake for you.

  • Opponent's Half Guard/Your Half Mount
  • Here I'm holding Half Mount, sitting in my opponent's Half Guard with my right leg trapped and my left leg free. I have my right arm under hooking my opponent's left shoulder as my left arm is under my opponent's head with my both hands in Palm-to-Palm grip.
  • Pummeling Arm In Position
  • To get this pass started, being that my right arm is under hooking my opponent's left shoulder, I then begin to pummel my left hand/arm in and under my opponent's right shoulder finding space underneath his armpit area.
  • Breaking Opponent's Grip
  • Once my arm is though, I then begin to walk my arms out & upward to brake my opponent's grip. As I walk my arms up, my weight is laying heavy on my opponent's chest so that it restricts his breathing as he's thrying to muscle to keep his grip.
  • Broken Opponent's Grip
  • As I break my oppoent's grip, I then continue to walk my both arms upward in a 45 degree angle. This keeps my opponent's short so that he doesn't grab hold of my arms with his. NOTE: I like to place my arms on the elbow joint as I walk them up so that my opponent can't bend his elbows to wrap his arms over mine.
  • Sprawling Legs Back
  • Keeping my hips tight against his, I sprawl my legs back and on my toes. NOTE: Notice how I'm not on my knees. My knees do not touch the mat. I stay on my toes so that I can hold on to that pressure I have on his hips with mine.
  • The Knee Slice
  • I then slice my knee right through over and across my opponent's stomach all the way out until it hits the mat on the other side. I slice through like as if I've stole first base and I'm sliding on second base. I slide low and tight so that my opponent still feels my pressure.
  • Pressure On Opponent's Face
  • As I'm making my pass and knee slice, I then drop my shoulder on my opponent's head/face so that he doesn't try to sit up and so that he doesn't see what I'm doing.
  • Pulling Out the Trapped Leg
  • Once my knee is out and on the mat, I then start to cut the corner turning into my opponent as I pull my right leg out. NOTE: With my left knee on the mat and my shin and foot is on my opponent's belly as I pull my leg out, there's enough leverage to make a clean pass without my opponent having enough leg strength to hold my leg with his legs.
  • Pulling Out the Trapped Leg II
  • Here's my right leg coming out as I cut the corner and turn into my opponent.
  • Different View
  • Here's another view.
  • Leg is Free
  • Now once my leg is free, I then start to collect my opponent's head with a Cros Face to establish side control.
  • Collecting the Head
  • I begin to collect the head to gain side control so that I can establish a dominant postition on my opponent and secure the pass.
  • Cross Face
  • And here comes the Cross Face. I free my right arm as I'm turn in to him and I collect my opponent's head by scooping it underneath it. NOTE: Notice how I keep my left arm underneath my opponent's right shoulder. I do this so that when my right arm comes underneath his head, my left hand will be there waiting for my right hand to join together, Palm-to-Palm.
  • Establishing Side Control
  • And here I am with a perfect pass and establishing complete side control position.

Seems to me that a guy with strong legs could actually sweep you around the 5th or 6th step.

I like this, I will have to try it. Personally rather than slice the knee across the belly, I bring it onto the chest and drive my weight on it, usually causing my opponents legs to open, allowing me to take side or mount!

Looks pretty interesting, I'll have to try it out in class Saturday. I'm always looking for a good way to get out of half-guard.

I agree with MMAfan26, looks like you could get swept on step 6 or 7. I'll try and sweep someone at that point and see how it works.

step 5-7 look pretty complicated...hurmm...

The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

I don't see it working for me. What's stopping him from pummeling?

Never seek defeat, but welcome it.

Imposible to sweep if you slice low on the belly which puts weight on his hips. If you slice across the chest, you will get get reversed because you hide high that way. Slice across the belly so that you ride low and so that your slicing leg adds pressure to your opponent's hips with your knee/shin area to pull your leg out.

You need to stay low so that you don't get reversed. Slice across low chest to chest so that weight is on him at all times.

Strong legs can give you a difficult time but you will eventually beat his legs with the right timing and leverage.

Try it out without being skeptical and believe in my techs.

I wouldn't be showing this is it had a low percentage on the execution and if it didn't work at all.

All my students use this pass and they love it.

What I found hard was slicing over huge bellies so when I come across a fella with a huge belly, I have to change angles on the slice and come down and diagnal across my opponent's belly rather than slicing it parallel to his hips.

If this doesn't work for you, don't use it. ; )

Thanks jc. This and all of your other techs are gold.
You guys really need to try something before you start questioning the move. Then if you have problems in practice you could ask for advice. But don't immediately think its useless.

It dosent look like it would work very often, but ill give it a try

If you dont win, atleast be able to say you raised HELL!!!

Timing my brotha, timing.

I've been training for 11 years now and out of all the Half Guard passes I've used, this one has been my favorite and
most effective.

"If you want to be the best, you gotta beat the best".

Love it!

Just tried the pass, and it works great. You are right, timing and position are key. But, if done correctly it's very effective.

Purple Belts through Black Belts in BJJ pretty much know just about the same techs but what makes them different is their timing, their pressure, and their leverage. These three elements are key in grappling, no matter if it's Gi or No-Gi, those three elements are key in the art of grappling.

For people to say, "it doesn't work", or "I can't get it", or "It doesn't look practical", or whatever reasons, excuses, or opinions they have on a tech, it's their usage on those three elements that's not disciplined enough - therefore IT DOESN'T WORK FOR THEM.

Thank you.

"If you want to be the best, you gotta beat the best".

well put Joe!

Wow. At first step #6 looked a bit unstable, but the more I thought about it, the more I found the technique BRILLIANT! Even if I get swept towards my back, the guy can't come on top of me because my knee will be in the way - and I can still continue the pass, and once the leg is free I'll just need to move the freed up leg behind me and come back up! If I get swept/bumped forward, also no biggie as long as I can control his head and the right shoulder...

Joe, what do you think of getting a high underhook with your left arm before going for the slice?

The reason why I walk my hands up and away from my opponent is so that I can stay low and tight. I need to keep my wieght on him so that when I get to position, I can make my move. I place my arms just above his elbow joints so that he isn't able to bend his elbows. This keeps him from pushing my incoming knee or pushingmy head away. This also keeps him from underhook my arms and hipping out to take my back. Not allowing him to hug my waist will stop that.

The main important side to dominate is, in the case here, his right arm as I slice to his left side. Dominating that side keeps him from sitting up and taking your back.

looks good to me, you should be ok as long as you stay low and get those kick stands out there.

"To err is human, to fart while rolling is just histerical"...me

the timing is killing me on my half gaurd passes lol... this one usually ends up with me getting rolled backwards and sweeping him from there, or my buddy shrimping out and fighting from turtle. We are working the crazy on the timing though...
