Half Guard Sweep

The half guard sweep is a great no-gi sweep to use when you find yourself in this position. The blocks and counters that you opponent may use to defend the technique will also leave them open for follow up techniques!

The step by step is explained in detail below the video:

  • 1
  • I am in the half-guard position and Landon is in half-mount. Landon has double underhooks, and I half
x'd my legs over his right leg.
  • 2
  • To create a little space, I put my fists into Landon's neck and force his head upward
  • 3
  • Keeping my right fist in Landon's throat, I dig my left hand under Landon's right armpit to get my underhook
  • 4
  • I pull my left leg out to the side as I fold my right leg deep into the back of Landon's right knee. at the same time I get onto my right hip and start scooting sideways like I'm going to pop my head out from under Landon's right arm to take his back
  • 5
  • Landon overhooks his right arm around my left to keep me from getting his back, he will also probally try to force me onto my back.
  • 6
  • I keep my left underhook deep and use my right hand to control Landon's left arm. It is important for me to keep Landon from putting me on my back.
  • 7
  • I post up on my right forearm and start drivng my weight into Landon - like I am trying to push him backards.

Landon defends by driving his weight back into me...

  • 8
  • When I feel Landon's weight driving towards me, I shoot my right arm deep under his left thigh as I shoot my hips under his hips to "load" his weight on top of me...
  • 9
  • I continue with the momentum of the roll and roll Landon over the top of me, I make sure I keep driving my right arm into Landon's leg to keep from getting triangled...
  • 10
  • I finish the roll on top of Landon careful to keep good control of Landon's left leg...
  • 11
  • now, I need to free my legs up for the pass, so I drop my hips to the mat and sprawl my legs out
  • 12
  • I kick my right leg over my left, passing Landon's legs
  • 13
  • I slide my left knee under myself to conrol Landon's right side
  • 14
  • I bring my right knee into Landon's side and bring my right arm to Landon's left side to establish a good crossbody position.

cool thanks

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"

Awesome, I love all the detail you put into the description, thanks.

Thanks for the great details!

a must know, other wise you just gonna get pommel from the bottom, awesome.

Never argue with an idiot, cause he'll bring you down to his level and beat you with experience

Thanks, great description. I've looked everywhere I made a couple of threads to properly understand this weep. A must know from half guard.

Looks like the "Twist Back" that Eddie Bravo has in his book.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't applying a lockdown on his trapped leg and extending it while pushing on his neck can help disrupt his base and distract him from your double underhook attempt.

Chaz, is there a specific reason you aren't locking him down in this particular example?

Louis, centainly...I also use the lock down when going for this technique - I just didn't use it in this example.

Sounds like TheLouis just read an Eddie Bravo book. Smile You don't have to do the lockdown to get half guard sweeps..

It is what it is, with or without your reaction.

awesome

Correct, you dont NEED the lockdown, but establishing a lockdown 1st really ups the percentage of the sweep.

nogeuira often uses this sweep
