Head & Arm Flow

The Head and Arm or Scarf position is a common position in Submission Wrestling, here is a lockflow drill for Submissions to add to your game and look out for. This flow has 4 submissions: Straight armbar, Kickstand armbar, Telephone arm lock and side choke. Remember, flow drills are not grappling, and your partner does not resist - it's simply a drill to train your submissions and the ability to see available options.

  • Step 1
  • I start in the head & arm position on Caleb
  • Step 2
  • Using a Palm down grip, I grab Caleb's wrist
  • Step 3
  • I push Caleb's arm straight, I want to make sure that his thumb is down and his elbow is locked against my inner thigh
  • Step 4
  • I step my left leg over Caleb's arm, I want to make sure my knee is upward and I drag his arm with my left leg to straighten his arm. To finish the submission, I arch my hips forward.
  • Step 5
  • To relieve pressure off his elbow, Caleb turns his thumb upward
  • Step 6
  • I lift my right knee off the mat and push it against the outside of Caleb's elbow
  • Step 7
  • To finish the 'Kickstand' Armbar, I extend my left leg outward as I continue to turn my right knee inward
  • Step 8
  • Caleb turns his arm out and pulls it out from between my legs, Anticipating this, my left arm is ready to grab his arm
  • Step 9
  • I lean forward, grab Caleb's wrist and press it down to my right knee
  • Step 10
  • I step my left foot up to my right...
  • Step 11
  • I step my right leg over Caleb's arm and trap it into the bend behind my right knee
  • Step 12
  • I triangle my right foot behind my left knee
  • Step 13
  • I grip Caleb's head, walk my legs back to Caleb's right hip as I pull his arm and head away from eachother to finish the 'Telephone' arm lock
  • Step 14
  • I put my left hand behind Caleb's right elbow and unlock my legs
  • Step 15
  • I release Caleb's right arm and push Caleb's elbow across his face as I drop my head behind his right elbow
  • Step 16
  • I drop my right ear down to Caleb's right ear as I begin to move my right leg back
  • Step 17
  • I grip my left bicep with my right hand, I try to make sure that my right bicep is as deep into the left side of Caleb's neck as possible and place my left hand on Caleb's head
  • Step 18
  • I spawl my legs back and drop my hips as I pess my head and grip as tight as possible
  • Step 19
  • Walking my right foot to left, and then left foot out - I create a better angle for the choke. To finish this submission I tighten my arms, press my head into Caleb's head and flex my right bicep into the left side of Caleb's neck

Awesome flow! There is so much to do in this area of control. Definitely a good area to learn a lot of effective and easy submission from!

I love this type of drilling. It's real, it's practical and it's repititious. Great job.

nice, butt kicking from step 1-19.

天下無難事,只怕有心人

Sweet flow! telephone lock is one of my favorites!

TRAIN HARD!

Awesome technique... really like the choke submission, goint to have to use that one at training.

sweet flow, also after step 19 crooked head scissors!!!

Poor Caleb, blocked at every angle.

So the rubber didn't go as planned. Oh well, it's only $30.

This is my bed and butter! I use a sag or a pancake for the takedown and go to work. One other move I would add is with the arm trapped you can roll over and go for a key lock or inverted arm bar on the other side.

side choke

Nice flow! The telephone lock is a new one for me - looks painful!
Although, head and arm control is something I avoid, I would always try and get the underhook on the far side to prevent them taking the back.....
