Japanese Headlock
Lockflow.com is proud to have Open weight King of Pancrase Champion and former UFC heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett demonstrating some of his favorite submission techniques. For more information on Josh, visit his site at JoshBarnett.TV
Josh comments on this technique "Here is a simple, yet very effective tie-up on the feet. I used a lot in Freestyle and Greco matches and was very successful with it. This tie-up leads to many different attacks which can also be used in MMA easily.
I don’t know where the name, “Japanese Headlock” came from it’s just the only way I’ve ever know it."

Step 3
Starting from a standard collar and elbow tie-up I allow my opponent to reach my neck with inside control.
From here I slightly change levels and reach deep with my free hand (not on his neck) and lock up the Japanese Headlock with an Olympic (palms together) grip.
Here is another angle of the lock. It is also important that you squeeze your elbows together and apply pressure with the lock to his trapped shoulder. This gives you the control point from where you will initiate your attacks.

Love it... can't wait to see the follow-ups!
Mmm hmm! Definitely could see that being great for some knees to the ribs!

good position...
The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

Awesome, Greco 101 right there. Randy Couture shows a headlock throw from the same position. Basically it is the same technique but in the opposite direction that Josh shows. Some knees to the body from this position can really soften him up if he is difficult to take down.
