Kick Over Arm Bar

Many times when your grappling, we end up in some crazy spots and modifacations of traditional grappling positions. Here's a quick Arm Bar submission from a variation of the Judo or Head and Arm positions.

  • Step 1
  • This position could be the Judo or Head and arm position, the modification is that Eddie's right arm is in-between my legs instead of over my right leg. As you can see in the photo, this time I'm in the Head and arm and I have grabbed Eddies wrist
  • Step 2
  • I lean back and place my right arm to Eddie's left hip as I keep ahold of his right wrist
  • Step 3
  • I quickly shift my hips toward Eddie's head and shoot my legs over his head as I pull his right arm towards my chest and shoot my hips in towards his armpit
  • Step 4
  • Once my hips are in and my legs have gone over Eddie's head - I'm in a good position to finish the armbar.

this seems kinda risky of losing position. i'll have to try it though.

I must agree!!! I do believe that if the bottom man began to escape, you could roll belly down and get it. I think!! I gonna try it and maybe take pics of it as an option to the escape.

2 stars! oouch, that's rough!

If you keep the pressure on his stomach, and then switch your legs over his head and hold the arm tight, this will work.

You HAVE to be quick, though.

O.K. you have to quick for this one. Nice armbar.

Tried it,Doesn't work.Almost impossible to get my leg over the arm(the friend i tried it with is a top ranking grappler)when he let me take his arm he just bridged out(quite easy to do with scarf hold, not a favoured position in mma) and because he had my leg he could move me that bit extra and take my back.Forgot to mention as soon as i put the scarf on he grabbed me we his left arm(natural reaction)

Doesn't seem to be any less effective than a falling armbar or farside armbar. They all require speed and accuracy to work. There always has to be an element of surprise against anyone with experience as well or you can have almost any submission countered. If you can't get this one to work, I'm guessing you're having too much delay between steps 3 and 4, which should be smooth and fast. Most people are not expecting an armbar from this position, which is why it works. I still only give it a 3 star because there are some variables that make it difficult.

Maybe, but why not just push his wrist forward and pop his forearm?

I assume you are talking about the position in step 2(?). You could "pop his forearm" if you were much stronger than your opponent, but I think that would require too much muscling, in which case you probably will not get the submission and lose position. IMO, anyway.

Clutch; also, if you tried to pop his forearm you might slip off his wrist and allow him to trap your left arm across his chest, exposing your self to a lot of different things.

You also risk being countered with a reverse triangle choke in step three if he gets his left leg over your face and pulls you in a little.

Still a cool flow though. I wouldn't force it; I'd only attempt it if the guy already had that underhook with his right arm under my left leg.

HATE.

I Like this arm bar I might be able to pull it off. Too bad im wrestling for school and have to put CWS on the back burner.

"Tap snap or nap." -The submission fighters moddo and threat, but most of all its our way of life.

Seems like a good idea at the time!!

Would definitely have to be very quick with this. But coming from a Goshin JuJitsu style I would say crack them n the nuts before changing positions, hehe. But that's not exactly competition friendly for you sports fans!

Maybe for a product of opportunity and nice to have tricks in the bag but awful risky to just go for.

Actually I've seen this move in a Jean Jacques Machado book I have called "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Techniques". The only difference is that it's in the gi section of the book =P
This move isn't impossible, it's just *much* harder to pull off if you're not sparring with gi.

"I don't care if it's God's own Anti-Son-of-a-B*tch machine or a giant hula hoop, we are not going to let them have it. What we will let them have is a belly full of lead, and a pool of their own blood to drown in!" - Sergeant Johnson

I recently started a Fight Club in my home town and I have tried this move out. It works very well if you headbutt the opponent before sliding back.
