North-South Lateral Choke

This choke is applied from the North-South position. It's one of the first submissions I learned for NS. When I first learned it, it seemed like it left a lot of space for the victim to try to escape. However, after trying it on a few friends of mine with varying degrees of skill, I have to say it works pretty well. Give it a try and see if it works for you too.

  • Step 1
  • I start off in side-mount.
  • Step 2
  • I scoop up Naqib's left arm with my left arm, gripping my own right shoulder with my left hand. I then place my right hand, palm-down against the mat, against Naqib's right hip. This prevents him from turning together with me when I switch to north-south.
  • Step 3
  • I spin my legs towards Naqib's head and my head towards his legs to end up in north-south. I keep my chest pushing down on his to keep him pinned.
  • Step 4
  • I remove my hand from around Naqib's left arm and start feeding it through under the back of his neck, palm up. The act of trying to feed my hand behind his head serves to push my shoulder deeper into his chest, further pinning him.
  • Step 5
  • Once my hand is in under his neck, I try to wriggle it through to get his neck as deep into the crook of my elbow as I can. I then sprawl and put all my weight on his neck, trying to touch the palm of my hand to my chest while keeping the back of my hand on the mat. I know my sprawl isn't too great in this picture, I didn't want him to fall asleep before the picture was taken. If he doesn't tap after a few seconds, just start walking your way down. In other words, move your body in the direction opposite to his feet, to expose his neck more to the choke.
Proceed to get revenge for his stupid poses in step 2.

Thanks for the technique, what is your right hand doing in step 5?

Haha I was just looking for some place to put it. In the picture I just had it lying on his stomach for extra control in case he tries to move around, I have it there in case I have to go for some quick hip control or something.

"I don't care if it's God's own Anti-Son-of-a-B*tch machine or a giant hula hoop, we are not going to let them have it. What we will let them have is a belly full of lead, and a pool of their own blood to drown in!" - Sergeant Johnson

I love N-S! Please post more N-S techniques!
Question: To clarify in pic 5 do you walk your feet clockwise or counter clockwise to tighten the choke?

"I do not fight because I have no fear, I fight lest the fear overtake me."

neither. down. move your body away from his. By down I mean that if moving up is moving your feet towards his head, you want to move the opposite way. Basically take small hops away from him, keeping yourself sprawled.

I'd post more N-S techniques, but I only know 3. This Lateral choke, and 2 others that are already on this database. What I was taught is called a Clock Choke is on this database as a "Howdy" (you might wanna look that up, it's sweet). The third technique I know from N-S is the Kimura from N-S, and that's on this database too.

gotta love the N-S choke

The Howdy choke from N-S I use a lot. I even catch decent guys in that move, but I will definitely try this one!

"I do not fight because I have no fear, I fight lest the fear overtake me."

I find the choke works even better if you move down first and then push your ribs against the side of his head.

looks like a reverse guillotine

The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

Cool! I've been looking for a good NS submission. If anybody has a counter, recounter, or additional NS submission, I'd be greatly appreciative.
