Quick Armbar from N/S

A simple N/S attack with a overhooked armbar. Very tight and easy to set up!! Most of the time people aren't ready for their arm to be attacked when it's under the opponents armpit... but then boom!!! Have fun!!

  • Step 1
  • We start with Shane and I in a north/south-chest to chest position.
  • Step 2
  • From the over hooked position, I scoop Shane's right arm up under my armpit.
  • Step3
  • Once I trap his arm tight to my side, I post my left hand on his face and pin it to the mat. On the street, post off of the throat!!
  • Step 4
  • I push myself up off of his face (throat). Skip posting on the knee as I did to show the arm pinning the face. Go straight to step 5!!
  • Step 5
  • I shot my right knee through to a Japanese armbar position.
  • Step 6
  • Sit back to the mat keeping the arm tight to my side.
  • Step 7
  • Finish in an overhooked armbar.

Ill have to try this one on my buddy along with that reverse paintbrush you did from this position as well.

Just the facts maam.

overhooked armbars are tight as fuck. i'm actually afraid of slapping them on, doing it too quick and something might pop.

Randomgit... I hear you!!! In the final pic, you can see me kinda keeping my balance as I sit back on his arm. OOPPSS SNAP>>LOL!!!

Sorry, I am haveing a little trouble seeing your exact leg positioning. I know you said a japanese armbar position. Is your right shin stuck in tight against his armpit to keep him from rolling into you?

Just the facts maam.

yes!!

Why is the guy hugging you from the bottom to begin with? How would you do this if he is keeping his forearms on his chest, elbows pinned, like he is supposed to?

Sometimes when you drill a technique, you work from the mistake positioning of the opponent. Sometimes they/you can't get to the position you want before your opponent catches you where he wants you.
Keeping your arms pinned to your chest isn't "always" the best bet. It makes getting out of this position difficult not to mention allows the top man to transition easier because your arms are sitting stagnant and not holding him down. A good ground guy will attack those arms and just because you have them pinned to your body doesn't mean he won't be able to pry them open just enough to attack with chicken wings, transition to kimuras, etc.

oryaboy, if we ever get the chance to roll, and I get N/S on you, please put your forearms on your chest for me!!! As a striker who rolls quite a bit, I couldn't ask for more!!! That's at least three to four free shots to the cranium! And before you scoff, I've pulled it off!

Lucky is the man who never has to confront what he is truly capable of.

Adrian to the rescue!!!!!!

Sergio, thanks for the response - I thought that you were capitalizing on your opponents mistake, but I wasn't sure.

Adrian, I am not even sure how to respond to that. Let's ignore for a moment that striking is prohibited in no-gi tournaments. Are you trying to argue that gently placing my wrist by your waist (see picture #1) would provide me with unpenetrable defense to your superior striking? Or are you just generally in the habbit of attacking people who ask questions?

Play nice!

Hey oryaboy, I apologize. I was looking at this not from a tournament standpoint, but a ring/cage view. In no gi, your positioning would be perfect, but in a ring/cage setting the last thing you would want to do from N/S is tuck your forearms to your chest, because you would leave yourself wide open for strikes to the head.

And believe me, I meant not to attack you, but to make a lil' joke based on my experience on the ground.

Again, I apologize.

YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE

These "Japanese armbars" are frightening to get caught in, I tap QUICK and pray that nothing hyper extends. This is a nifty move. Sergio, do you do a lot of north-south attacks on a regular basis?
