Regaining The Underhook From Half Guard
![]() |
The Underhook from half guard may be one of the most important tools to have to work your half guard game. This video covers a great method for getting that underhook if you've lost it.
From Youtube user: GGBJJ
"This is one of the single most important videos of mine and the fewest people will watch it. At a quick glance it appears like a simple move that does not require a lot of attention, but trust me when I tell you that having the ability to regain the underhook is one of the most important things you can do.
First of all it is important to avoid being flattened on your back. You should always have the underhook when available but I understand that sometimes your timing will be off and your opponent will get it. In these instances it is important to block the bicep so that you are not flat on your back, being crossfaced with your opponent having the underhook.
Once you have blocked the bicep it is important to bridge up and over. Make that space for your underhook with your hips and not by trying to take a shortcut by the armpit. The space is made by dropping the hip (the space is made on the way down) AND by moving your hips back (reference the video).
Once you have the underhook the world is your oyster! It opens up the back, gives power to your sweeps and takes away your opponents ability to flatten you out!"
