Reverse Headlock Takedown from the Japanese Headlock.

Another great takedown option from the Japanese Headlock tie-up. This is a simple, yet high percentage takedown that doesn’t leave you at much risk either. This technique opens up a lot of knee strike options for MMA as well.

Big thanks to AMC amateur fighter and HS wrestler Dave “Kirby” Sullivan

  • Step 1
  • Here is your starting point: the Japanese Headlock tie-up
  • Step 2
  • I start by driving my weight and pressure behind my under hook to put all of his weight on his far side. At the same time I am starting to pull the head into my chest and to the ground. My weight is also shifted to my right leg as I torque is head and shoulder in this sequence. About 65%.

(Note: When you drive with your under hook your pressure needs up into his armpit and not around his head.

  • Step 3
  • As I continue to torque him I lowering my hip as I do it and start bring him in to the ground. I am still driving into the under hook and pulling in and down on the head but I have now stepped my left leg forward to give me a strong pivot point.

Keep your hips in and your chest tight to theirs.

(Note: I find it helps to lead with your head as you do this as it will help you to use your whole body in the movement.)

  • Step 4
  • Another angle of the last position. Once his head starts going to the mat the rest of his body will follow. At this point my hips are doing most of the work and not my arms.
  • Step 5
  • This is the point right before he hits the ground. I have torqued him so much that all his weight has transferred to his left leg and he has lost his point of balance.
  • Step 6
  • After he has lost his balance we continue to torque until his back hits the mat and we take a pinning position. We still have our Headlock which will give us a strong base to move to a side position and start out ground attacks.

Against an opponent with a very strong upper body you might not be able to just torque him over but if you cans simply get his head going down and his bodyweight following it you finish this move. Continue to circle and guide his head into the mat, they will follow their head and by circling you will off balance them enough to make them fall

When I say circle I mean with speed! This speed makes it so they cannot catch up to their head in time to regain their balance. Also don’t let you hips and chest separate too far from his hips or you will lose it.

  • Step 7
  • You also have an option of doing a Reverse Headlock throw if he tries to stay tall as you start the torquing against his shoulder and head. The entry is the same back step pivot motion as in the Head and Arm throw. You will cover to side position as he lands.

Good old Head and Arms! When I show this takedown to people, when I get to step 5 ad the opponent is still falling, I gain mount before they hit the ground.
