Robert Follis' "Early Morning Riser"

If you are familiar with fighters Randy Couture, Matt Lindland, Evan Tanner, Dan Henderson, Ed Herman and Chris Leben, then you should know that they all came from the world famous Team Quest gym out of Oregon.

Team Quest's head coach is a man named Robert Follis. We were fortunate enough to have Mr Follis stop by our gym in Everett, WA to train on his way to teach a seminar in Canada the following day.

After some great rolling, Robert was gracious enough to show us a great side control escape called the "Early Morning Riser" It has several follow up options, but here is the first part.

  • Step 1
  • Robert puts his right hand to his head to create a strong "Forcefield" block.
  • Ste 2
  • As Chad pushes in to Robert to try and flatten him, Robert turns his right hand over...
  • Step 3
  • and reaches his left arm straight out under Chad's armpit.
  • Step 4
  • Robert quickly sits up to his Early Morning Riser position by posting on his right elbow and sitting up as he reaches his left arm over Chad's back.
  • Step 5
  • Robert creates a "Wedge" by shooting his hips back and hiding his head next to Chad's hips.
  • Step 6
  • Robert posts up on his right hand and reaches deep into Chad's belly with his left arm
  • Step 7
  • Robert plants his left foot...
  • Step 8
  • as sits up and out to his right side
  • Step 10
  • Robert puts all his weight onto Chad's upper shoulders as he switches his right grip to Chad's inner thigh
  • Step 10
  • Now Robert brings his feet in and pulls Chad over into a position where Robert can now attach his back.

I actually worked this with Robert yesterday. It works great but you definitely have to commit, sit up quick, keep your head on his hip and get your hips out. Its a great way to get to your opponent's back.
