Sambo Rolling Calf Crush
![]() |
This is a way to get to the calf crush position from standing. it works well with the jacket, but it also works no-gi if you are into no-gi standup and clinch work. i personally do not clinch up no-gi, so i would only use this with a jacket. this article is just on the entry. to better understand the submission see chaz's article on the crush HERE. you have many options once you get to the final position i will refer to as simply the 'crush control.' eddy bravo refers to this position as 'the truck' so if you are interested in finding other techniques give it a google search.

if he has a jacket grab his sleeve. if he doesn't... don't.
lift his sleeve, or pop his elbow up and duck your head and inside arm under him. your inside leg should shoot through his. make sure your arm is not going in between his legs as it normally does for a shot.
bring your inside calf high up and try and place it in the crook of his knee pit. if you can not get it there, then dont worry you can fix it on the ground or in the roll. let go of his sleeve if you were still holding onto it.
forward roll on your inside shoulder and reach your hand in under your shin and in between his legs.
your shin should be in his knee pit. if it is not that is probably because you rolled too far forward. try and roll under yourself and not forward next time. if you are in the right spot then grab his foot and pull it down over your shin for the crush.
if he doesn't tap then triangle your legs to force your shin deeper into his knee pit. you can also use your foot to force it in, but i didn't do that in this video because my partner was tapping like crazy early on.
your oponent can sit up and grab your inside arm if he wants and try an armbar to counter. be aware of it.

Where is your school located Reilly? I think I'm going to add it to my list of places I want to visit and train at.
Your leg lock stuff is always great, and this is no exception.

Love this move... I usually shoot for it off an arm drag to make sure I'm past their arm.

SWEET! I can't wait to try this in the morning!
So keeping the roll compact and short so your shin stays in the kneepit is the biggest thing to focus on?

yes, try and roll underneath yourself. like your trying to roll backwards by rolling forwards... umm... yeah.
you know what i mean. =)
Awesome tech.

I used to make those similar sounds when we do 2 minutes of elbow or calf compressions. good stuff Reilly, thanks!

I love this sub, so the more ways I have to enter into it, the better! Thanks, Reilly.

Being attacked is like being asked a question- if you answer right you won't get asked anymore questions.
Reilly rocks!
haha.
thank you lindsay and chaz.
i think YOU rock!
love this one... i have never seen it before either.
Nice..this is one of my "quick kills".
damn that's slick =)
i tend to do this from havin one hook in from turtle. Noticed you did not triangle your feet the first time you did it befor tightening the lock, guy i rolled with held my other leg so i decided to try and pull the lock in without triangleing. Result: guy extended his leg, i poped the liggament on the outside of my knee...so be carefull!!
ouch!!!
duly noted. =)
This i s an awsome move Rielly. I need more stuff like this thanks bro.
Snap or tap your choice!
nice change to the usual joint lock go ing for the unusual compression lock
It's all a puzzle, isn't it, Joseph? Like a game of chess, perhaps. The pieces move, apparently aimlessly, but always towards one single objective: to kill the king. But who is the king in this game, Joseph? That is the question you must ask yourself.
this was a fun one to practice last night in class. the first time I went for it I grabbed a white belt and ended up landing on top of him. ; ) but with a little more exploration was able to see my mistakes, namely not bringing my cranking leg up high enough, and my between his legs hand needed better position and timing to trap his ankle instead of reaching out to pull it towards me. I like this move it was fun to do, though I would not use it outside of a match with rules/restrictions. I didn't like how my groin was open to him, and that my legs were entangled. definitely not a move to use in a self defense situation, but for it's use and place, very cool.
