School Boy Roll Up to Arm Bar

The School Boy Roll Up is a great takedown to use to catch your opponent off guard if you get behind them.

Here is the original Technique of the School Boy, HERE.

Here is a nice follow up to the School Boy Takedown that you can use to try and catch your opponent in an armbar.

(***Note - I used to call this the "Wrestler's takedown", but Josh Barnett sent me an e-mail and told me it was originally called the "School Boy Roll Up", and since Josh can kick my A$$, I changed the name)

Here is the video of the technique with the step by step explained below, have fun!

  • Step 1
  • Make sure you have all your Lockflow gear on...
  • Step 2
  • Find some goober to practice on....

I couldn't find any goobers, so MMA Fighter, Chris volunteered to help.

  • Step 3
  • However you got there, start in the body lock from behind
  • Step 4
  • From the body lock, I reach my right hand through Chris's legs and hook his right leg. I sit out with my right leg onto my right hip so that my body lands behind both of Chris's legs
  • Step 5
  • Keeping my grip as tight as possible, I twist my body to the left - as I pull Chris over my body
  • Step 6
  • As Chris falls over me, I keep my grip tight to his hip, I drive my chest weight into him, and begin to sit up
  • Step 7
  • I pop onto both knees and drive my weight into Chris - claiming side control and forcing Chris to face away from me
  • Step 8
  • I continue to walk both my knees up behind Chris's back as I bring my left arm over Chris's right arm and overhook it. - Notice how my right arm is still between Chris's legs from the takedown.
  • Step 9
  • With my right hand, I grab Chris's right wrist (if I need to, I can use my left hand to feed Chris's hand to my right hand)
  • Step 10
  • Keeping ahold of Chris's wrist, I grip my right wrist with my left hand
  • Step 11
  • In order to make room for the next move- I pull crist to his back
  • Step 12
  • I put my right knee into the right side of Chris's body, in between his right leg and right arm
  • Step 13
  • Keeping tight control of Chris, I step up on my left foot
  • Step 14
  • I step over Chris's head with my left leg
  • Step 15
  • Keeping my hips as tight to Chris's armpit as possible, I fall to my back (keeping the leg), squeeze my knees together, and raise my hips to finish the armbar

Sweet! We drilled these yesterday..It's a pretty slick move, people.

Wow... I like it. I have seen that same single leg take down, and that arm bar, but never the two of them chained together like that.

Just the facts maam.

man you guys are quick, I just posted this 1 minute ago!!!

SWEET sequence! Love the shorts and patches!

Thanks Keven, I need to work out more - those are size 6's!!!!!

Question! Why is it important to keep the leg hooked even after you start falling back for the armbar?

cool I'll give it a shot Laughing out loud nice move

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"

You want to keep the leg hooked so he has no way of rolling out of the armbar, Cassie.

I remember seeing a kid hit this at a high school wrestling meet... i love how well wrestling moves can translate to mma.

Even without the schoolboy rollup, figure fouring your arms through the leg has got to be a stable way to setup the armbar. Will this break their grip even if they try to save their arm with their other hand?

I was also just thinking, I end up in something like step 8 when passing the guard. Hmm . . . I'm idea-ating.

Cool move will have to try it out next time I'm in class!

and it leads right into the leg control. you dont have to take the armbar... i love it!!!

ya, you could go for the kneebar, toehold, RNC.... lots of options!

wow thanks first time ive seen sbru, itll give me something other than a suplex from behind!

Hooking the knee with your arm in this case is similar to Eddie Bravo's "Spider Web" position. Controlling their near leg shuts down their shrimping (which blocks one of the most common arm bar escapes, turning towards the trapped arm and driving it to the mat) and as bert pointed out, it also prevents them from rolling out.

This is a sweet technique.

I am loving this one more and more each time I look at it. I'm gonna have to try it next time I have a chance. I usually jump up and plant both of my feet into the crooks of the other guy's knees to break his base down. But this looks like it will get me the top every time. I'm gonna re-rate this one a 5. Am I allowed to do that???

Just the facts maam.

cool....he called chris a goober

not quite Duke, you better re-read it!

he said he couldnt find a goober so chris volunteered to help, chris isnt a goober, hes a meat head.

step 1 is the best!

and upon further reading the rest is cool too!

Cool... Thanks Chaz!!!! You gave me a new option when i have back control... i usually just jump up and go for my least favorite technique in all of grappling... the RNC.

I saw this as a flow on from a failed ankle pick- roll slightly and reach up- continue from step four

Being attacked is like being asked a question- if you answer right you won't get asked anymore questions.

imma have to try that one out i wind up takin muh opponents back a lot but i usually go for a rear-naked choke now i can do somethin new

I like the takedown. It looks like you are doing a judo side fall with the near leg held high. I don't think you could get the submission very often though but the takedown looks sweet. Five stars just for the takedown. You might get the submission though so still good to know.

i like it...a lot!

this move is sick, u'll people cry lik
a female dog if u know what i'm
getting at.

This is pretty sweet but i wanna get some of those shorts where do i go to get some?

i know you didnt see that one coming but it wouldnt have mattered cause your chin was high and your hands down away!

They come without the patches - those you have to get seperate...
but you can get them here:
