Side Control Escape - The Cheerleader

Here is a way to reclaim guard that I call the "Cheerleader", The name comes from the backwards kick used to capture your opponent's leg that resembles a cheerleader kick. I know that different gyms call this move different names, and 10th planet guys have their own name, but lets not get stuck on that, if the move works for you, great. If not, move on and look for another option.

I like this technique when my opponent and I are dry, wearing gi pants, or while wearing ankle wraps. It gets tricky when your opponent is sweaty and slippery. Although it can still be done.

Another thing to watch, If your opponent is in a "High" side control, or if their feet are tucked, this option may not be the best. Play with it, and let us know what you think!

Here is the Video, with the Step by Step below:

  • Step 1
  • Lockflow member Bildo has me in Side control (Cross Body Mount)
  • Step 2
  • I turn my hips slightly TOWARDS Bildo, as I throw my right leg over his right calf and hook the foot
  • Step 3
  • I use my hook to stretch out and lift Bildo's leg upward
  • Step 4
  • Keeping the foot hook, I quickly back kick my left foot under Bildo's thigh, right above the knee
  • Step 4 - Side Angle
  • Here is a side view of step 4
  • Step 5
  • I continue to lift Bildo's leg as I release my foot hook and block Bildo's left knee with my right hand
  • Step 5 - Different Angle
  • Another Angle of Step 5
  • Step 6
  • Keeping the right foot hook in, I pull my right leg under Bildo's body
  • Step 7
  • Now, out of danger of Bildo's side control, I position myself into butterfly guard...Wheeew!!!

very nice. I like that youve added the vid! This breaks it down and makes it look much easier to pull off then I thought. I saw it in the RG book a while back and really didnt pay it much attention. Ill have to play with this.

I see sweeps in like 4 or 5 of those panels too. Very nice!

Good stuff ! It looks like you can transition to leg control in step 5 by locking up an Outside Triangle too.

Step 2. (Towards/Away?). It looked like you're turning away (like giving the back), then back in after you've gotten the hook.
Love the flow, and I can totally see how if you were slippery it'd be hard to land.

I like this; I have doen it by accident (meaning I struggledand it happened to work) but I never really thought about HOW i did it.

Jarrod Card does this all day it works most of the time but i have been countering it lately. Once he hooks my leg i just sit through.
