Super Guard

A new student of ours named Aaron picked up this slick submission from Charlie at the San Diego Fight Gym while he was training in California.

  • Step 1
  • Aaron is on the bottom in the closed guard position.
  • Step 2
  • Kale reaches forward and attempts to put Aaron into the Can Opener.
  • Step 3
  • Aaron puts both hands into Kale's armpits and pushes Kale forward up above his head.
  • Step 4
  • Aaron brings both of his legs as high as he can up torwards Kale's armpits and locks his feet together
  • Step 5
  • Aaron reaches up behind his own legs and locks his hands together
  • Close-Up
  • A close-up of Aaron's grip.
  • Step 6
  • Aaron finishes the submission by straightening his leg upward and squeezing his thighs into Kale's ribs as he raisies his hips off the mat to add more pressure.

sweeeeeeeeeet

Don't mistake kindness for weakness.

Super!

we tried this in practice and while it does suck the life out of you a simple forearm choke from the guy on top almost always forced the bottom guy to tap first

I was thinking the same thing!

Works like a charm, when you manage to pull it off. I've found it easier to pull this off against opponents with not so wide backs. I can't, for the life of me, pull this off so easily against those with a thick torso. Then again, I do have short arms.

Nice submission.. I love to try this one out

We tried that at La Mecque. OOOUUUCCCHHH!!!

Yea i have had that one demonstrated on me before. I don't know how easily it will be applied in middle of a match... but if they manage to lock it behind their legs... definitely are about to be in some rib pain...

Well Im glad you guys are picking up some new moves!

I agree with the forearm choke. The move is interesting, but crap guys, all you need to do is shift to the side of them and get a Scissor Lock across the ribs with just your legs, which would be the same submission only without leaving you on your back and open for chokes, punches, headbutts etc etc etc.

Seems fun, I'll try it out, and let's see what happens eh?

So the rubber didn't go as planned. Oh well, it's only $30.

Another one to try tomorrow. Also concerned about a forearm choke though.

Did anyone notice that Hoger tried this against Evans at the last UFN. I think it was the last one!! I saw it last night on Spike!

Yes, I have had that move put on me before, and it hurts pretty badly. But they guy that put it on me was about 165 lb and 5'9" or so. I am 200 lb and 6'2", so when he was squeezing me, his knees were right in my ribs. When I attempted the same move on him, I was expecting to just crush him. But what I noticed was that since my legs were so much longer than his, my knees were actually above his back and ribs, and I was trying to squeeze him with my thighs, so It was just slightly uncomfortable for him. What does everyone else think, does anyone think there is a way around this problem for tall people?

Just the facts maam.

I've been able to use this pretty effectively. As a sweep! I apply it, and then they just roll over in pain when I'm done.

"I'm as gay as a daffodil, my dear."

I can see during a grapple touny, but how good is during a MMA fight? That chance of hammer punches or short elbows?

Joe Stevenson tried this one on Josh Neer @ ufc fight night 4, he looked like he had it good, but neer didn't tap, he just outwaited him and joe let go. It seemed to me that Joe got underneath him enough to avoid chokes and punches by straightening out his legs, but then again he didn't tap him.

That rox...

It's the one you DON'T see that hurts the most.

Ok correct me if I am wrong, did Joe Stevenson get that on Josh Neer? He may have at one point of time. I will tell you that the person I do remember him getting it on was Eves Edwards. I do remember that. Am I wrong? If so will someone please correct me. thanks

uhhh...ultra...

The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

This submission causes Ray Elbe to vomit on his opponent who got a win via disqualification/submission. Way to go superguard!

wow!
cool move.
good enough to make him puke!
that's super

Do I wanna fight?
Hell yeah I wanna fight!

The applying the "super guard" in the video is Niccoli Holt from Cobra Kai.

i've locked it in a few times, but really only tapped a guy once. what is ideal is if you are both kind of on your side and it's easier to get it real tight. I might try this in a grappling competition, but never MMA because you would simply get smashed.
