Toe-Holds... For Realz

*(first off i want to say that there are other ways to do a toe hold then the way i am demonstrating, but this toe hold i feel is the strongest, most versatile and most secure way to finish the submission.)

toe holds are hard to do.
i have seen a lot of people post 'how to' articles on toe holds and either they do not explain them fully, or they dont do them correctly at all.

i think people that do know how to do toe holds, dont know why they work and just do them instinctively, so there is not a lot of explanation out there on how to make them work.

i think those of you who are good at toe holds will find that you are going through all the steps i show here, but may not realize it.

those of you who get toe holds some of the time, and not other times will probably see in this video why your technique is not working some times but does others. every step i demonstrate HAS to be done in order to get the submission. if just one of them is off, then the entire thing is a waste of time and energy when you should be going for a different sub, or change your position to fix the toe hold.

i hope this article is helpful.

memorize this checklist, and every time you do a toe hold run down the check list to make sure you have everything set up:
1)opposite side hand grabs the foot (right leg, left hand)
2)grab foot on the pinkie toe side of foot
3)thumb pointed toward the heel
4)knee bent
5)knee facing you
6)turn toes toward their butt, and the heel toward your face

  • the steps
  • if you are attacking his right leg grab the foot with your left hand. grab the blade of the foot (by the pinkie toe) make sure your thumb is pointing toward his heel.
  • the steps 2
  • reach around his leg. make sure his knee is bent. make sure his knee is facing you. grab your wrist, and twist his toes toward his butt and his heel toward your face.

Ah, basically all the steps I do except for his knee facing me... I'll have to try that!

Just the facts maam.

good stuff.

nice i do that without knowing but i figure four my hand onto my other hand not the wrist

It's all a puzzle, isn't it, Joseph? Like a game of chess, perhaps. The pieces move, apparently aimlessly, but always towards one single objective: to kill the king. But who is the king in this game, Joseph? That is the question you must ask yourself.

I'm sure Reilly know's this, but just to clarify to everyone; please don't take this post as a be all, end all to toe holds. You CAN do a reverse toe hold with same hand, same foot (e.g. right foot, your right hand). There are lots of ways to get a toe hold. And one aspect often overlooked in all leg locks; pinching your own knee's together is crucial on most leg locks (as well as other locks). Thanks Reilly for another great technique post.

thunder;
i agree that there are probably other ways to secure a strong toe hold, but honestly i have not found any that work for me from so many angles, and can not be easily escaped. if you could demonstrate a toe hold with a different grip that is as secure as this one i would be very happy to see it. thank you in advance =)

maybe something cool from your CSW training =)

Nice breakdown and explanation. exactly the way I do it.

Thunder,

I agree that this is not the end all guide to toehold but at least for me it is the easiest to catch ratio toe hold... BTW love the Reverse Toe hold and Step Over Toe Hold as other toe hold options

Awesome Reilly! I love this, i agree that their are other toe holds, but i find that this style works the most effectively!
Thanks for the technique!

very nice! i've been working towards toe holds more lately while rolling. thanks for the pointers.

Agreed - pinky hand on pinky toe w/ thumb facing heel (figure 4) is the best way to break a foot. Broken a couple oponents feet this way in grappling competitions. On two occasions my opponents continued to fight and did not feel the break/pain until after the fight - I attribute it to the Adrenaline. Great Move!

Awsome, it's going to help me a LOT.

Awesome stuff. Looks like I just have to get the knee facing me.

Thanks Reilly! I'm sure you've heard this before, but you're a f*cking awesome teacher.

riley's vids were probably the biggest factor that drew me to lockflow.
