I didn't watch the fights, but I heard a bunch of complaints... I read a interesting comment from someone that said..."There is only one thing that is certain in MMA... and that is bad judging". On a side note I heard that all the judges were former fighters.. can anyone confirm this?
The pride scoring system worked pretty well I thought, and it was based on damage and the closeness to having the fight stopped.
How can you tell damage if a guy brusies easy he will look like a mess from powder puff shots. I liked the the 10 min first round though but I think a 5 min first and a 10 min second would result in more finished fights.
I think it would be a mistake to make each feat worth x number of points. People would point fight. End of round 2 you would know how much you are ahead od down and go out to get x many take downs. Or even throw subs up to get the points with no plan to finish it. The karate league we fight in kicks are worth 2 points and hand contact 1 point. We see 70 to 80% kicks watering down the sport.
I like the 10 point must system we just need smarter better educated judges.
But I think the best way would to modify the contracts you get 10,000 to show 10,000 to win or 20,000 to finish.

I think damage was based on shots landed, heavy shots landed, and submission attempts. not facial bruising... but maybe someone more familiar with the pride rules can explain... I know we have a member or two that has judged for PRIDE before...
Quantifying MMA is way to complicated and would never work.
I think judges need WAY more training. Is there any governing body for judges??? There should be. They (especially in UFC, etc.) should be require to watch tape of X amount of fights and judge them, then explain it. They should then shadow judge X amount of real fights with another judge and see if they score it the same. Only then should they be allowed to judge a real fight.
Referees go under the same type of training, why not judges?!
I also think that part of the win/contract should be an incentive to 'finish' the fight. So that fighters really take the chances to finish.

I recently completed and became a FILA grappling ref.
FILA has been working hard to modify their rules every year for the better. To ensure that it's an exciting fight to watch.
A few key areas are:
-No Stalling (top or bottom) They are quick to verbally warn about stalling and will give a caution (penalty type point) if there's no advancement.
-Fleeing: if the guys on his back the guy on top must engage, you cant back up and let go. you have to remain in contact (one hand on the knee for example)
-1 point for getting full guard back - this really encourages the bottom guy to work for a reversal(any reversal and sweep (bottom to top) is 2 points) or to get his guard back (1 point)
-Negative 1 point for jumping guard without immediately attempting a sweep or submission
I think a few tweaks to IBJJF like these could help the sport.
Jake Skully mentioned the other day how he noticed that there are WAY less take downs in bjj now, as compared to the early worlds.

Lets make our own judging system...we can call it "the marshal law"
