As the world of MMA grows, the necessity to hone the skills to become the ultimate warrior is vital to their ability to compete for the belt. So goes the necessity to be properly geared. Although a fighter doesn’t wear a whole lot in the cage, the one piece of equipment besides trunks, cup and gloves is a mouthpiece, or mouthguard.

Klench Kustom Mouthguards, in Washington State, is a licensed dental laboratory of 15 years. We have studied the philosophies of dentistry and understand what it takes to fabricate ultimate protection.

Recently we’ve had the opportunity to work with Sally “Slick” Krumdiak at Charlie’s Combat Club in Everett, WA. Highly rated in the world of Women’s MMA, she is a spunky little firecracker able to unleash brutal blows… quick! Although she can surely administer her own can of whoop, it would be wise for all fighters to be properly protected from the fiery blows of any opponent.

When we met with Sally to take her impression for a custom mouthguard, she said: “Wow. That was painless”. When we talked about the design of her guard, she definitely did not want it bulky and constrictive. She had also expressed the fact that she wanted the proper protection, but also wanted the appearance as though she was not wearing anything at all.

-Bulky. One of the things that fighters do not want is a mass of material that is uncomfortable. Well, a custom mouthguard surely consists of far more material than your average boil-n-bite. On the other hand, it will be approximately 300 times more shock resistant. Also, the bulk of a custom mouthguard is very important. As your teeth are clenched together, it expands the jaw joint away from the skull eliminating the possibility of a concussion, or KO, through a driven force to this region. This region is known as the condyle. When the condyle collides with the skull under impact, it sends a shockwave to the brain resulting in trauma. Fighters that now wear a custom mouthguard say: Yeah, it is more bulky for a few days but once I got used to it, it was no big deal. It was also good to know that I was that much more protected.
We also shorten the length of our guards in the molar region to eliminate any gagging reflex you may have previously experienced.

-Constrictive, No! …Yes, they have more material, but what it allows you to do that a boil-n-bite can’t, is “retention”. A custom mouthguard is pressure formed to your mouth and fits like a glove. Once it’s in, it’s in! No more clenching to hold your guard in place. You will have the ability to open your mouth and breathe! It completely eliminates the worry of your mouthguard falling out, or getting knocked out! To remove it from your mouth, you generally have to reach in with your fingers and “de-suction” it from your teeth.

-Appearance. Most fighters want an aggressive, in your face graphic that when in full frontal scowl, reveals the word or image that best describes your state of mind and character. Not Sally. She wanted her pearly whites revealed as though she wasn’t wearing one at all. So, I layered some pretty pink material in the back, and in the front is completely clear material for all to see her deceiving smile.
