Jeff Glover's Deep Half Guard DVD Set

Jeff Glover’s Deep Half Guard DVD set
When I heard that Budo Videos was doing a DVD set with Jeff Glover I was excited. I am fascinated to watch that guy roll in tournaments with his inexplicable ability to roll in and out of submissions all while never seeming to be a slave to tournament positioning. Rolling like that is all fine and good in your gym but to watch someone roll with what seems to be no regard for what I think of the logical progressions of position in a tournament (guard, pass guard, side control, submission, mount or back) is nothing short of amazing. That alone got me excited to see his DVD. I then heard an interview with Jeff on the Fightworks Podcast and I immediately went over and bought the DVD. And it was the best $70 I have spent in quite a while.
The DVD is a two DVD set broken up into 6 volumes:
Escape to Deep Half Guard
Deep Half Entrance
Sweeps
Passes: Deep and Normal Half
Darce
Back Attacks
Each section has 3-8 techniques all of which were very well explained and demonstrated. A few of my favorite parts were him showing how to get into DHG from a variety of positions both good and bad. The production value is great, the audio is crisp and clear, the video was shot in a variety of angles (some of which were a little bit shaky which I found surprising) but the editing is done in a way to reinforce the instruction, which I really appreciated. While watching it listening to him explain a hand position that was hidden from view the camera cuts to another camera clearly showing the hand.
The content itself is extremely well thought out and present in a way that makes it easy to watch. I have never been able to watch an instructional DVD from beginning to end in one sitting. The first time I popped disk one in my computer I not only watched the 57 minutes of technique I also watched the 43 minutes of extras! After watching both disks I feel that I have a basic understanding of the position and a variety of techniques to execute sweeps, transitions, and submissions.
The extras on the disks hold almost as much time as the technique portion and really add to the overall DVD quality. The extras include information on leg locks from DHG, a few minutes of Jeff sparring with a purple belt in the studio, an instructional on Jeff’s use of a stability ball with drills to improve your jiu jitsu game, an interview with his history in BJJ, some funny infomercials, and one of my favorite sections the “tips” section. They devote a few minutes just going over the minute details of the DHG. Covering the proper positions, how to avoid submissions and counters and tips for setup.
All in all it is one of top five instructional DVD series I have watched and is one of the easiest to watch. The only thing I wish they had done was have Jeff do a voice commentary on his tournament matches to explain his thought process. This DVD personally I think would be more of a blue belt or higher DVD just because I don’t know if most white belts have the positions well enough down to move into a more advanced positions, but I wish this DVD came out 2 years ago when I got my blue belt so I could have gotten a head start.

i second this. its a great DVD set.

$70 dollars, huh....

$70 is well worth it.

i've been trying the deep half the last few weeks. Awesome stuff. I've been having lots of success with it.

I've been playing with it a bit, and probably need to go back and review the DVDs. My problem is that if I hang out there for too long, my opponent locks up the kimura grip. He can't finish, but we get in a stalemate.

Worth every penny of the $70, one of my favorite parts is the hour of his comp footage in both gi and nogi on each disk. That guy is one of my grappling heros (which put me in an akward situation once when he was cornering a guy I was competing against in a tourney.)
