Arm Pin Pass with Strikes

Here is a nice MMA sequence utilizing the 'Arm Pin Pass' with strikes. Step by step pictures are below the video:

  • Step 1
  • I am in Nate's closed guard
  • Step 2
  • with my left hand, I grab Nates right wrist.
  • Step 3
  • I push Nate's hand to the mat and shift my weight on top of it to keep it trapped down.
  • Step 4
  • I tripod up on my toes; this lifts Nate's lower back off the mat.
  • Step 5
  • I start walking my legs clockwise; this moves Nate's back over his trapped arm.
  • Step 6
  • As I am moving Nate, I reach my right hand under Nate's back and grip his right wrist.
  • Step 7
  • Once I have secured my right grip, I pull Nate's trapped arm under his lower back and release my left grip as I drop back down to my knees and by doing so, also drop Nate's weight onto his own trapped arm.
  • Step 8
  • My left hand is now free to strike at will.
  • Step 9
  • I use my left elbow/forearm to break Nate's guard and force his right knee to the mat.
  • Step 10
  • I move my left hand to Nate's knee and keep pressure on it as I raise my hips off the ground.
  • Step 11
  • I shoot my right knee over Nate's right thigh.
  • Step 12
  • I finish the pass and still have Nate's arm trapped behind his back.
  • Step 13
  • Now I'm free to wail away at Nate with my free hand. Poor Nate!

HAHA! poor natey poop

i like it!

天下無難事,只怕有心人

Would this also leave your inside ear open for striking? It seems like you are protected most of the way through this move except for the start and the end, but then you trap your arm under your opponent and sacrifice a one-for-one tie down. Is there a way to reclaim your arm and still pull this move off?

Firecat, good point, I try to keep my head down low to minimize the strikes, once the lock is in, my strikes should be much stronger than Nate's. If you put one of your arms behind your back up high, lay down, and try to throw punches with your other arm, you will see that you dont have much power

ok so from the pic's it looks like you are holding his arm down across his back to his lower hip then are you taking his leverage away by bringing your inside knee up tight and under his left shoulder limiting his movement and power? Also in steps 7 and 8 you are removing your base to the right hand side, are you preventing the re-roll with your hips. (no worries I'll give this one a try and see if someone can put this move on me as well.)

O ya by the way love the vid and the title!!!!

Oh my God..geez
I was gonna post this tech, with a different variation on here. Oh well...Ok I'll do the variation.

Just the facts maam.

I like the way you grab the wrist and walk to the left to pass it under Nate to your other hand.!!

Nice one Chaz!!!!

TRAIN HARD!

smooth position change, rarly train g'n'p i always think of it when rolling but not drilling stuff like this! it opens up a lot of things thinking of pounding as a positioning tool!

step 13 looks very cool.. Cool

The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

I use that all the time. Awesome technique. Thanks

I see key lock from pic 13.!!!

what is/ are the easiest ways to get your arm back? I've had this guard pass used against me twice in the past 6 months. The first time I went to z-guard so he couldn't walk around. the second time I couldn"t do a damn thing

ok tried this out and my Coach tried it on me, if you keep a good basis with your knees and drop your weight back (as shown above) no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the re-roll. only counter was to stop the move at step 4. If it gets past that I hope your strong. (I rolled my wrist on step 4) then started working submissions from there

this is my fav pass, great for big guys, I love it and now we pound the face

Never argue with an idiot, cause he'll bring you down to his level and beat you with experience

i love this move, u gotta be fast tho. i tried it while sparring and couldn't quite pull it off.

Before each filming of Walker: Texas Ranger, Chuck Norris is injected with fourteen times the lethal dose of elephant tranquilzer. This is, of course, to limit his strength and mobility, in an attempt to lower the fatality rate of the actors he fights.

in step 5 if he breaks guard and spins toward his trapped arm it looks like he could easily sweep, or off balance, ompalata etc...

Bigfat, that is certainly an option, however I am controlling is arm, not vice-versa so I can let go of the arm and look for a pass, block, counter etc- if he opens his guard.

yeah good point, i like this for mma it is good for strikes without a doubt.. thanks for showing it!

Looks like u may be able to throw some left knees in step 13 >: )

I use this pass quite a lot and its mostly pretty succesful but on bigger guys I have problems breaking the guard open. I find if you sprawl over their right hip in step 7 it opens a bit easier and if you keep the pressure on and continue walking clockwise you can really put pressure on the trapped shoulder (before you open the guard...) Sometimes they even tap!
Anyone got any other tweaks for breaking the guard??

I hate when I my armed pinned like that

I pray, do yoga, meditate and still want to smack people

wow, Nate's gotta feel that the next moroning.

mann, I feel bad for Horodecki

I like this technique but have a question: what do you switch to if your opponent uncrosses his legs as you are tripoding/exploding up?

Thanks,

This is one of fav passes. One of my students tried on me and as soon as he got hold of my wrist, I re-gripped his wrist and scissor swept him...to his amazement.

thunder...sounds like you need to add to the database.......

I've been studying this technique for a while. I really like it... obviously.

We do ours a little different. We posture up once we get the arm behind the back so we can get more power on our punches and also so we can encourage our opponents to put a shin across the belly so we can pass the guard or step over the shin block to catch them in a "Step Over Toe Hold".

Thunder you mentioned a brilliant sweep counter to this move. I've never heard or see it before but I know exactly what you're talking about. Awesome.

Chaz, what I like about the way you do it is that you stay low. I think this can help prevent them from powering their arm back out, and it makes it much more difficult to counter with a Triangle, which we use to counter when someone is dropping bombs, while postured up from the arm pinned position. In addition, I just realized that you were ripping up your partners Liver, which , because his arm is trapped, he is helpless to protect. Yeah... those fists be flyin up into that liver so deep, it be cryin! And you thought it was rain.

This is a real peach of a variation on this classic arm trap. Thanks for sharing!

I look at it again and can only think about how great it is

Just the facts maam.

Arena states that he uses this one all of the time...do his opponents not know how to keep their hands/arms from their opponents?
Three Rules:
1. Don't let opponent get ahold of you...
2. Don't let opponent have access to/around your neck...
3. Don't give opponent your hands, arms, legs, ankles, etc. unless you have one heck of a good counter planned...
easier said than done you may think, but when two skilled fighters meet, it is more efficient to strike or kick and maintain/control distance/timing. Then the only thing your opponent can do offensively is to rush you and when that happens you should be able to intercept and submit him/her respectively.

My apologies, there I go again thinking about not gettin to the ground at the start. Though I think its alot of energy used it can work if, like others above stated, you are very quick in its execution and you have to follow through to finish opponent. Personally, I am pretty sure if I were there, he would definately not pin my arm underneath me. He may get something else but not easily.
