Blocking a Head Kick
Learning to Block a Kick to the head is a must in a Kickboxing Match. There are several variations, in this variation the block would be the same for either side, but the hands would obvoiusly be switched.

Let's start with the basic motion. Here, I am in a fighting stance.
Lets say that the kick is coming towards the left side of my head(right side of the picture). I keep my left hand hand and tight, Lean slightly towards the kick and begin to bring my right hand over to absorb some of the impact of the blow.
At the moment of impact, my right hand reaches across my left and the kick is absorbed through both gloves. Notice how the elbows are kept in tight.
Eddie and I square off...
Eddie throws a high right kick towards my head. just before impact, I lean into the kick and begin to reach across with my right arm
The impact of the kick is caught on both gloves

If you got good timing you can use the right hand to sweep the leg to your right, offbalancing him and putting you behind him.
Or, if you are mean and have good timing, turn the right into a upward elbow, which really really hurts the shin
-"Or, if you are mean and have good timing, turn the right into a upward elbow, which really really hurts the shin :)"
Andrew, your a mean guy.
Actually I was always taught by my Muay Thai coach that this was not a very good way to block a kick, and he demonstrated by faking a headkick and punching me in the face.
A better way to protect against a head kick is to pretend you are holding thai pads, and put up a "cage" in front of your face, turn your body towards the kick and move backwards, in the direction he is kicking; ie; if he is kicking you with his left leg, you turn your body facing his kick, and circle back and to the right.
my instructor is a two time world champion in taekwondo and that shit still hurts even if i do block it

Well the MOST important thing is to have your hands up SOMEHOW, and move WITH the kick! Do this even if you plan on catching it
i think this is a bad block.
What happend if the guy makes a combo. Kick ang after that a staight punch
I don't necessarily relish the idea of leaning my head into a kick, especially if not wearing gloves.
I like are set up just extended out towards the kick. I hope to make contact with the kick before it has reached its maximum velocity, IE early on.
However, if you miss time it and catch it late, it is gonna hurt, if not break, your forearms.
Love technique debates!!!
-fake kicks should not get the full commitment of the block. If you fully commit to any feint, there is always a follow up. ie, if you check a feinted kick with a full check, you are open for may follow up options. If you block the kick with both hands in front of your face, are you not open for a body punch or a leg kick?
If you circle away from a left kick feint are you not open for a right low kick? I'm not saying that this is the only way to block, It has worked well for me, and if it works for you then great! - train hard!!!
I agree with some of the post that this appears to leave your right or left side open...Yet I believe that good foot work, and a good knowledge of evasion, and defensive tactics are also essential in not getting hurt.
I dont think taking a punch in the with the gloves (or wrist) is a good idea in an mma match .Great for kickboxing tho.

I agree with Charlie. There is no perfect defense, and any other headkick block is still going to leave you open for fakes.
Putting your hands up at all is going to leave you open for body shots, anyways. So drill the move and make sure to only use the block when the kick is really coming.
About the follow-up; anyone who's a halfway decent striker knows that after a block, you need to counter. So after blocking that kick, YOU are the one who follows up.
Great technique, I definitely need to drill this.
BDFighter: For MMA, you just adapt the technique by taking the kick on the palm/heel part of your hand. Plus, taking the kick on both arms spreads the impact out.
Daniel: Blocks aren't really about taking pain away. In a fight, you won't feel it much. It might hurt, but the first concern is not getting kicked in the head and losing.
I'm fairly new to this mma thing and don't have any formal traing. I hope to learn things from you guys, and ladys, sorry. I'm thinking if you can reconize the stance of a kick coming wouldn't it be best to not be there when it comes? Or may even going for a takedown as his leg is coming up. I also noticed cung lee do a sweep of the other leg as his opponet tried for a head kick. I'm willing to learn the correct way to protect myself.
Hurmm..
instead of using the right hand as extra 'cushioning'...move in close towards him with a straight right..
/*the momentum is on his instep/shin, not thigh*/
still need lotsa practice tho...
alt: step in with the left foot n throw a jab or give a strong push on his right shoulder /*no leg to support his weight on the right side*/
again:practice..practice..practice..
The strong man is not the one who wrestles, but controls himself in a fit of rage.

I take the point of this block to be if you are in a spot where you 'have' to absorb the kick, instead of moving; and I can promise that it's better to lean into the kick. Blocking as if your holding thai pads will work with a snap kicker- i.e. tkd or American kickboxer, but a full hip rotation on the kick could easily break all 4 forarm bones. Pillow the head and lean in, or get the @#$ outa the way.

Technical as allways Charlie. Thank you for this site.

im going to try it thanks
Cro Cop should learn this one... HAHAHA
great technique. thanks
I hate pajama clubs !
Umm wouldnt you want to try and make it so you take less force by leaning away from the kick so it grazes you instead of slamming into your hands or wrists if your wearing lil four oz gloves youd be sol.
great points guys, this is called blocking a head kick, not evading a head kick- lol.
Leaning into the block alows you to maintain a decent position for a follow up, leaning away - leaves you off balance and therefor not able to counter as effectively. - If you dont like the technique - no problem, dont use it.
Personally, this blck has saved me from being KOed in sparring sevral times! Yes, avoiding contact all togther would be great, but if I'm moving in and that high kick is coming up I can pick the point of impact by leaning into it and have some grat counters off of this. If I block their Right leg I can counter with my right hand. This is a must know block in my book!
"You shut your mouth when you're talking to me!"
If you dont like the technique - no problem, dont use it.
AMEN!!!
I love the "what if's"...well, what if frogs had a machine gun...then the snakes wouldn't f**k with them. Listen, this is a great high kick defense. Good job Chaz. I was taught the same thing with some minor differences i.e; while leaning into the kick, I also side step away from the kick. Also, the other hand is sometimes used to "cup" the foot so that the kick doesn't continue at an angle and hit the top of your head ala cro cop. Some kicks will go up and then cut downward onto the neck. Some will hit at a horizontal plane and some will hit at an upward angle. This type of block will take care of all those types of kicks. I do have to though....not the best kick bawa. ha ha
