Jabs can be a big pain, although usually it lacks knockout power they can add up quick, and also are used to set up devastating combos. Here we take a peak at a basic jab defense, the baseball catch, and use it to set up other combos.

  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • Here Larkin is in a basic Boxing stance.
  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • Larkin brings his rear, right hand in front of his chin to "catch" a jab.
VERY important, when catching a jab, Larkin moves back slightly to absorb the jabs power. without moving back, there is a chance the jab will power through the catch and still tag Larkin.
  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • So As a jab Comes for Larkin, he uses the baseball catch to defend it, and pushes off his front foot to glide back some to ensure the jab will not connect.
  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • another view.
  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • This also allows Larkins lead hand to be free to defend against a cross. Here Larkin Perrys the punch.
  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • No need to over extend on the perry, the punch missing by an inch is as good as a mile, Even better as it keeps Larkins defense tight.
  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • Now Larkin is set up for his own attack! A cross...
  • baseball catch, perry, combo
  • Followed by a hook!

Nice look at some solid basics BW. Good stuff.

I Love this Counter. I use this particular counter alot while sparring and it is quite effective against a LAZY JAB or someone who jabs alot without following up. The most important thing, in my view, is to get the rhythm of their jab and constantly circle toward the opponents jab hand, if they are a conventional-stance fighter, because it allows you to get off at an angle when you parry and come over with a great over-hand or cross. this is basicly what i do all night long when sparring. effective countering of straights frustrates the hell out of your opponent.

noone should even begin sparring until they got these basics down!

You can also make sure you put a bit of juice into your catch - don't just put your hand up there or your glove will be driven back into your chin. This ensures you don't have to step back so far.

I agree with rear naked wedgie.Don't slide out of the pocket. You can also throw your jab at the same time as the catch.Aim it at his right hand, this will keep the right from coming next and open up your own 2,3 combo. Its a nice little old school trick
