The "Up" Kick

The "Up" kick is a very useful tool to have in your arsenal when fighting in a MMA match. Up kicks can be used to Knock out your opponent, set up a submission or keep your opponent at bay!

Heres a video of Matt and Nate Drilling these techniques.
Thanks to both of these young fighters, Matt just learned these moves for this article!

  • On the Bottom
  • Matt finds himself on the bottom in the up down position
  • Chamber
  • Matt coils his left leg back and aims his heel at Nate's face
  • Step 3
  • Matt shoots off his shoulders and raises his hips off the mat as he drives his heel into Nate's face.
  • Leg Kick - chamber
  • Here, Matt prepares to kick Nate's leg by sitting on his left hip and pulling his right foot back
  • Leg Kick 2
  • Matt quickly rolls on his left hip and drives his shin bone into Nate's thigh
  • High kick
  • For another version, Matt could post on his left elbow or hand (not pictured) and post up on his toes so that he sould shoot the kick up to the neck or head area.

its always sweet to see a guy connect with a kick on his back. good move!

i like the roundhousekick to the head, if youre on your back, its a good way to get back onto your feet. is you miss the kick, just keep spinning and you´re up=)

The Up Kick is so sweet when he thinks he is going to pass and instead eats a heel to the face.....

My fav up-kick was Bustamante vs. Bohlander. Classic.

Just a question, in MMA fights (UFC, etc) is doing a straight kick to the knee (like a front kick) while on the ground or otherwise, legal? If so, the knee is a heck of a lot closer to a grounded opponent than the head.

Admittedly, nobody's been knocked out by getting kicked in the knee. So, there's that. Smile

A kick to the fron of the knee is not legal in MMA but you can kick the side or the back of the knee

I think it is now legal in the UFC to attack the front of the knee...
