Spinning Hook Kick

OK, I can already hear the critics... But in my defense, I trained in Taekwondo for about 10 years before I started MMA, so it was only natural that I brought one of the most common kicks over with me.

I have had some great success with this kick, earning two KO's (one as a amatuer and one as a pro) with it. I included the end of my Washington State ama. title fight on the video below...

I have used it to attack my opponents legs and head while standing, and even used it on several opponent's legs while they were lying on the ground and I was standing over them.

I have also been taken down as a result of using this move in a fight, so make sure you have a good set up. I was in one fight and came back to my corner after being taken down twice because of this kick, and my corner (Josh Barnett) said "Hey those kicks are really pretty, but don't throw another one!", I said "yes sir"

  • Step 1
  • Eddie and I square off
  • Step 2
  • Two important elements to the set up here. One, I throw a jab to the outside of Eddie's face to get him to get his focus to the outside, and 2, I step across Eddie's center line with my left foot
  • Step 3
  • I pivot my left foot and look over my right shoulder to spot my target
  • Kick Low
  • If I like the leg attack, I keep my leg straight and lift it up as I begin to swing my hips
  • Kick Low
  • I swing my heel into the side of Eddie's outside leg
  • Head Attack
  • I set up the head attack with the same Jab and cross step...
  • Spot
  • Same pivot and spot...
  • Head Attack
  • For the head attack, I lift my leg higher as I use the spin to create force
  • Head Attack
  • Again, using the force of the spin, I ram my heel into the side of Eddie's head

LOL!!! I must say I have been on the end of a few of Chazes spining heel kicks !!! One was to the calf and I couldnt walk right for a week and one was in training he kick me right out of the ring!!! LOL Ill never forget!!! Good sh*t! I coulnt ever pull it off but if you have a fast spinning heel kick is a cool looking way to finish a fight!! Nice Chaz!!!

Hey Chaz that's one of my favorites too. I love that jab to the outside! Another way to set up the head kick is to force your opponent to move straight back, from close to mid range, so they will be in the proper range when landing the attack. You can do this with jabs and punch combos as well.

One of the most important things to practice for landing most kicks is proper angles and distance. If you miss with a kick you are either wasting energy or likely to be taken down.

I've felt a slot one to the leg but the head.... O man there is no way. Very good stuff

Had 2 ribs separated by one of those kicks once. spinning heel kick to the body is very effective too.

I spar with a dude who has a blackbelt in Tae Kwon doe and also in weng chung karate, anyway, this guy pulls off kicks like that in class all the time with lightning speed.

The tighter the chamber (pulling you knee into your chest as you turn) is for the Spin Hook Kick the more force you will get out of it. It will also help you spin faster.

What am I saying. Fat guys don't know Spin Hook Kicks, or do they?

Sweet Kick!! One of my favorites and I love the variation of going to the thigh. It's super tricky and hurts!

My favorite kick! After so many years in Tang Soo Do, I'm amazed I never see this kick in MMA. It has so much power. Never thought about using it to the thigh, though....that's gotta hurt! One plus - it's fast, so if you miss you're already facing your opponent again. One minus - the reach (imo) is slightly less than a spinning back kick. But, I'd make that trade for a (almost) certain knockout if it lands. Thanks!

I landed this kick about 3-4 times in my fights, and missed it about 10 or so...

That is insanely awesome, flash and effective.

We had a guy training with us who claimed to be a second or third (depended on which day it was lol) degree blackbelt in TKD. He was always saying he could kick me in the head, from here... there... standing face to face... from across the room lol. You get the point... Well, he finally said something to irratate me (i believe it was Renato Sobral sucked) and i challenged him. His style against my style. His stance threw me off but as he steped in for the setup for a kick i was already taking a single leg. So what does he try to do? JUMP off his other leg and kick me with it... so i pulled him down to the ground and slammed him on his side. He complained and tried kicking me from face to face in, and i pushed him away. He followed my push with one of these. it caught me but, i grabbed it as it did. He hurt me pretty good but i pulled him down to the ground again and got him in a RNC eventually. It was fun for a kid (me) going against a 42 year old

I love this kick. It generates a lot of power and does major damage. The heel is a killer.

You can also pivot and jump off the right leg. To try and land a high kick to the head with your left foot.

I would throw this kick a couple times without going for the hook to the head. and instead go straight for a spinning high kick to the head and the third try instead of going for the legs.

That way your opponent will try to check the leg kick, and catch a foot to the face.

of course your going to hit bawa in the head with his hands down like that!...kidding. spinning kicks are underrated for MMA, there's a time and place for them. Whatever connects and scores are great techniques.

Ill say one thing though, score a couple of vanilla knockouts with punches...people forget in a month or two. Land a thuderous kick in a fancy way...people always remember it.

Its an awesome kick. I had two knockouts with it in my pro kickboxing career. Now that one to the leg, man I could see someone going ass over applecart with that one, hehe!

This is a great technique. I was initially swayed on its effectiveness after watching Andy Huq score with it. Its devastating and I'm so glad you put it up.

It's all a puzzle, isn't it, Joseph? Like a game of chess, perhaps. The pieces move, apparently aimlessly, but always towards one single objective: to kill the king. But who is the king in this game, Joseph? That is the question you must ask yourself.

That JUST HAPPENED! I can't believe you actually put someone out with a spinning heel kick. That is RAWsome! I think I'd retire and call it a great career if I ever landed anything like that. How can you possibly top that?

I would just like to say that I love showing people a video of my boss kicking someone in the face.
